SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team kept the wins coming, as they recorded a 3-2 victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, Jan. 24 at Merlis Belsher Place.
Thanks to
Levi Cable's shorthanded snipe with 1:17 remaining in regulation, the Huskies managed to win their sixth-straight contest and 14th in their last 15 games.
Cable recorded a two-point night for Saskatchewan, while
Kohl Bauml and
Logan McVeigh also found twine in the victory. With McVeigh's tally and
Carson Stadnyk recording an assist, the pair of forwards both extended their point-streak to six games, tying the second-longest streak in the Canada West this season.
Jordan Tkatch, who played one of his best games of the season, also tallied an assist in the win.
Huskies goaltender
Taran Kozun improved his record to 14-3-2 with 25 saves on the night.
For UBC, Jarret Tyzka opened the scoring, while Matt Revel provided a pivotal goal in the hockey game, as his tip-in tied the game up at 2-2. Jake Kryski, Jerret Smith and Anthony Bishop all tacked on assists in the win.
Rylan Toth did all he could between the pipes for the Thunderbirds, but unfortunately for the netminder, his 37-save performance wasn't enough to record the victory.
Saskatchewan moved to 17-4-2 on the year, while with the loss, UBC moved to 6-11-4.
It took just 3:16 of action in the first period for the visitors to open the scoring, as they stunned the Huskies crowd. Tyszka ripped home a shot from the slot past Kozun, to make it 1-0 in favour of the Thunderbirds. Tyszka snapped
Taran Kozun's shutout streak at 132:25 with the tally, as the Huskies netminder entered the contest not having allowed a goal since the 10:50 mark of the second period in Saskatchewan's clash against the Lethbridge Pronghorns back on Jan. 10.
However, just 1:29 later, the Huskies responded. Cable and Bauml broke in on a two-on-one, and the pair of fifth-year forwards executed to perfection with Cable saucing the puck across on a silver platter and Bauml making no mistake in firing the puck past Toth to tie the game at one goal apiece.
Saskatchewan kept it coming, as they took advantage of another odd-man rush late in the frame. Tkatch broke into the zone and fed Stadnyk, whose one-timer was stopped by Toth, but McVeigh was there to clean up the scraps, banging home his fourth tally of the 2019-20 campaign.
With the Huskies taking a 2-1 lead into the intermission the score held until just six minutes remaining in the second when the Thunderbirds struck back. Smith's point shot found a crowd of bodies in front of the net, and it was Revel, the former Saskatoon Blade, who deflected home his third of the season.
After a third period, which saw neither team capitalize on their opportunities, it appeared overtime was calling.
That was until it was
Levi Cable's time to play the hero. The fifth-year forward from Hudson Bay, Sask. delivered the dagger for the Huskies, as his shorthanded snipe beat Toth to make it 3-2 Saskatchewan, which was enough for the home side to escape with two points.
The Huskies will attempt to bring out the brooms tomorrow night as they hunt for the sweep, while the Thunderbirds will search for a split as they fight for their playoff lives.
