MEET SCHEDULE
So far Saskatchewan has claimed eight medals from the meet being held in Winnipeg, MB. Six of those medals have come from a Huskies' women's team that is second in the overall standings. Their 61 points puts well ahead of the third place Western Mustangs' 42 and they trail only the Guelph Gryphons who have compiled 81 points. The women's team is currently on pace for their best finish since 2005 when they won the national banner.
Michelle Harrison and
Katelyn Lehner have paced the women's team so far in Winnipeg. Harrison won gold in the 60-metre hurdles while Lehner claimed silver in the long jump and bronze in the 60-metre hurdles. Also earning medals were
Julianne Labach who finished second in the 1000-metre race,
Courtney Hufsmith who crossed the line third in the 3000-metre and
Nicole Ostertag who won bronze in the pentathlon.
On the men's side a strong showing in the heptathlon helped the Huskies to 16 points, good enough to be tied for ninth in the nation. For the second year in a row
Kieran Johnston won gold in the heptathlon and
Landon Gill joined him on the heptathlon podium by finishing third with 4,881 points.
The third and final day of competition will take place tomorrow, March 9, and there a number of Huskies looking to add to the team's already impressive haul of hardware.
Labach, who was recently named
U SPORTS Track Athlete of the Year, will compete in both the 600- and 1500-metre finals. Hufsmith will join Labach in the 1500-metre race where the two teammates entered the weekend ranked first and second in the nation respectively.
Also competing tomorrow will be:
Josh Websdale (pole vault),
Brennan Degenhardt (shot put),
Brett Lachance (shot put),
Tyrell Sawatzky (shot put), the women's 4x200- and 4x400-metre relay teams as well as the men's 4x400-metre relay team.
