SASKATOON – On a night where last season's Canada West Conference championship team was honoured, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team took care of business with a 93-39 victory to record the sweep over the visiting MacEwan Griffins on Saturday, Nov. 9 on Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the PAC.
Saskatchewan, who went 7-0 during their pre-season, stayed perfect with the victory, as they improved to 4-0 during the regular season. The 4-0 start marks the second time in the past three seasons the Huskies have started their season with a perfect record through four games.
Brianna Fehr had a strong night in the win for Saskatchewan. The fourth-year guard from Calgary recorded 19 points, the most in her four seasons wearing in the green and white, while also adding six rebounds to her stat line.
Sabine Dukate was excellent, as the 2018-19 All-Canadian was superbly efficient from the field, connecting on 7-9 three-pointers to lead the Huskies with 23 points.
Saskatchewan's deep rotation was a significant factor in the win, as they outscored MacEwan 42-9 in bench points.
The Griffins fell to 1-3 with the loss and will look to get back in the win column on home court next weekend.
Mackenzie Farmer and Shannon Majeau led MacEwan, registering eight points apiece. Hayley Lalor, sister of former Huskies guard Kelsey, registered three points and a team-high six boards.
The Griffins hopped out to a quick 7-4 lead in the opening quarter, which saw the Huskies head to the bench early in the ball game. However, the home side responded and Dukate took over. The fifth-year guard connected on all four of her attempts from three-point range in the frame, helping the Huskies to go on a 24-1 run to take a 28-8 lead after the end of the first.
Their momentum carried over into their second quarter, hopping out to a quick 8-0 run to begin the frame. Four different Huskies hit from beyond-the-arc in the quarter, allowing the team to take control of the contest and in turn, take a 49-16 lead into halftime.
The Huskies took control defensively in the third quarter, holding the Griffins off the score sheet from the 6:04 mark of the frame on until the buzzer sounded to close the third.
Saskatchewan outscored MacEwan 19-17 in the fourth, with 12 of the 19 points for the Huskies coming from
Brianna Fehr, as the hosts were able to ride out the final ten minutes to record the sweep.
The Huskies will continue their four-game homestand when they welcome the Regina Cougars to town on Nov. 22 but will spend next weekend on bye, preparing for their provincial rivals in a rematch of last season's Canada West championship.
Meanwhile, MacEwan will return to their home court in Edmonton, where they will take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack for two conference clashes.
