SASKATOON – A pair of power-play goals and one short-handed marker proved to be the difference on Friday night as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team took advantage of their opportunities in a 4-1 win over the visiting Manitoba Bisons.
Carson Stadnyk,
Donovan Neuls,
Levi Cable and
Kohl Bauml scored for the Huskies with
Jared Dmytriw and Layne young both recording a pair of helpers.
Devon Skoleski responded for the Bisons who also got an outstanding effort from Tyler Brown with the goalie making 47 stops in the contest.
The win moves Saskatchewan to 6-3-2-0 on the season and marks their sixth win in their last seven outings. Manitoba meanwhile falls to 5-5-0-1 on the season.
The scoring got underway near the mid-point of the first period with the Huskies on the power-play. After Brown made a save on a shot from the point, Stadnyk was in the right place at the right time for his seventh goal of the season.
After the Huskies dominated a vast majority of play in the first period, it appeared Manitoba found an opportunity when they went on the man-advantage late in the frame. Instead it was the Huskies who scored, as the rookie Dmytriw sent in a pass that sprung Neuls and the forward made no mistake in putting the puck past Brown to double the home-side's advantage.
A chippy second period saw plenty of penalties but no scoring, thanks in large part to the play of Brown who made 14 saves in the frame.
Manitoba made things interesting just five minutes into the third.
Captain and team scoring-leader Adam Henry played in a nice pass to Skoleski and the forward did well to make a move in-tight on
Taran Kozun in the Huskies' net and cut the lead back to one.
It was another power-play marker that sealed the deal for Saskatchewan however.
With a two-man advantage
Gordie Ballhorn sent in a shot from that point and Cable banged home the rebound.
These two teams are back in action tomorrow night with puck-drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside Merlis Belsher Place. That action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
