CALGARY – The University of Calgary women's hockey team fell just short on Friday night thanks to a late goal from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, who added an empty-netter to take a 3-1 win.
Annaliese Meier provided the lone goal for Calgary while
Emily Upgang,
Abby Shirley, and
Kate Ball lifted the offence for the Huskies.
The Dinos got on the board first with three and a half minutes left in the first period. After being held behind the Saskatchewan net by multiple Huskies players, Meier was able to find her way out and wrap it in through
Jessica Vance.
A power play in the second period for Saskatchewan seemed to be the jump they needed to tie the game up. Some great pressure and a tie up at center ice resulted in a three on one opportunity for the Huskies.
Isabella Pozzi fed it across to Upgang who was able to get some air under the puck and roof it on Kelsie Roberts.
With just minutes left in the game, the Saskatchewan pressure paid off yet again.
Abby Shirley picked up a loose puck after a mad scramble in front of Roberts and slotted it home to give her team the late lead.
Despite a late push from the Dinos with an extra attacker, Calgary couldn't tally the tying goal to push the game into overtime, and the Huskies added an empty-netter in the final second to make it 3-1.
Roberts stopped 29 of the 31 shots she faced while Vance made 22 saves for the win.
The rematch between the two teams is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. once again at Father David Bauer Arena, live on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
