CALGARY – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies got the lone goal of the evening, securing a 1-0 win and a sweep of the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Fourth-year forward
Shyan Elias potted the only goal the Huskies would need as they earned their fifth win of the season. Goaltender
Camryn Drever made 22 saves to deny the Dinos' of their fifth victory.
After a slow and tentative opening period that saw neither team score, both sides turned up the pace for the middle frame.
The Dinos' best chance came on a breakaway for Delaney Frey three minutes into the second period. Elizabeth Lang made a quick pass to the streaking Frey, but her wrist shot was blockered away by the Saskatchewan goalie.
Kelsey Roberts faced 14 shots by the Huskies in the second period and remained unbeaten until the final minute when her team went shorthanded with two late penalties. Calgary managed to erase the five-on-three advantage, but with a Dino still in the sin bin, Elias deflected home a
Sophie Lalor shot to give Saskatchewan the lead.
The Huskies were relentless and continued to pressure Roberts in the third period, forcing the Dinos' star netminder to make a number of key stops. At the other end of the rink, the Dinos threw eight shots at Drever but were unable to find the equalizer.
Roberts finished the game with 27 saves in the loss.
The Dinos are back in action next weeknd when they begin a home-and-home set with the Alberta Pandas, while the Huskies will face off with the UBC Thunderbirds at home.
