SASKATOON – The first action of 2019 is on the horizon for a University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team that will begin the second half of their 2018-19 schedule by playing for a good cause.
Â
The first of their two games against the Calgary Dinos, taking place Jan. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m., will see the Huskies don special jerseys during their warmups for what will be their 11th annual Play for a Cure Night. Â
Â
Those jerseys will be auctioned off during the game alongside other items donated from members of the Huskies women's hockey community with all proceeds going to the
Canadian Cancer Society's volunteer driver program.
Â
On the ice, Saskatchewan will be looking for a strong start to 2019 after finishing 2018 by playing four-straight games against the Canada West leading Alberta Pandas and the reigning National Champion Manitoba Bisons and coming away from those contests with one win and three losses.
Â
In total, the Huskies enter the second half of the season in fourth place in the conference with a record of 5-6-4-1, good enough for 24 points through 16 games.
Â
Calgary meanwhile, has struggled through the season so far. Their record of 2-12-0-2 leaves them in last place in the conference with eight points and they dropped their final three games of 2018.
Â
5 Things
Â
1: Friday night will be the Huskies 11th annual Play for a Cure Night that promotes and raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.
2: The Huskies will be back in Merlis Belsher Place after going 4-3 in their new rink during the first half of the season.
3:Â Saskatchewan has two players in the top 20 in league scoring, led by
Bailee Bourassa in 11th with ten points.
4:Â While Calgary struggled in the first half of the season, one of their two wins came against the league leading Alberta Pandas.
5: In her last 29 starts, Huskies goalie
Jessica Vance has recorded 12 shutouts.
By the Numbers
Â
9 – Saskatchewan has dominated the series between these two teams recently, winning nine of their last ten games against the Dinos.
Â
2 – After a hot start to the season the Huskies have won just two of their last seven games.
Â
28 – Elizabeth Lang leads the Dinos but sits 28th in the league with six points through 11 games.
Â
1 – While Saskatchewan swept the Dinos in Calgary earlier in the season, both games were decided by just one goal.
Â
Scouting the Dinos
Â
The Dinos will need a strong second half run and a lot of help from the teams ahead of them if they wish to make the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16. With 12 games remaining they are 13 points outside the playoffs.
Â
In just 11 games played rookie forward Elizabeth Lang is tied for the team lead in scoring alongside defenceman Laine Grace with six points.
Â
While Calgary's 16 goals scored this season don't put them too far behind the other teams in the conference, their defence has allowed 42 goals in just 16 games.
Â
Kelsey Roberts has started 14 games between the pipes this season. The third-year netminder holds a 2.13 goals against average, and a 0.935 save percentage this season.
