SASKATOON – Two come-from-behind victories in two days proved to be too much for the University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's soccer team, as they dropped a 3-2 decision at the hands of the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary on Aug. 26.
Â
Fifth-year forward
Tyler Redl continued his torrid start to the season, scoring both of the Huskie goals in the contest. Redl has now scored three times in the team's first two games.
Â
First years
Tobi Ojo and
Nikolas Baikas picked up assists in the contest. The two rookies combined for two goals and six assists in their outstanding first weekend of Canada West soccer.
Â
Goalie
Greg Buckley made three saves in the loss with Tysen Chatani, Branden Canejo and Moe El Gandour scoring goals for Mount Royal.
Â
Trailing the Cougars 2-0 after 30 minutes, there was a sense of déjà vu to the Huskies'
season-opening 4-2 victory over the Calgary Dinos when Redl found the back of the net after a nice pass from Baikas.
Â
The comeback wasn't meant to be this time however. The Cougars made the score 3-1 in the 52nd minute and while Redl scored again in the 86th minute, Saskatchewan couldn't find the tying goal in the dying minutes of the match.
Â
The Huskies will now return to Saskatchewan with three points from a difficult season-opening road swing.
Â
They are back in action for their first games at home of the season on Sept. 1 against the Alberta Golden Bears and Sep. 2 against the MacEwan Griffins in games slated to kick off at noon and 4 p.m. respectively. Tickets to catch all of the action on Field 7 inside Nutrien Park can be
purchased online.
