Huskies double up Dinos to kick off 2018 season

Aug. 25 (Saskatchewan Huskies 4, Calgary Dinos 2) Calgary, AB

SASKATOON – Three unanswered goals in the second half powered the University of Saskatchewan Huskie men's soccer team to a season-opening 4-2 victory over the host Calgary Dinos on Aug. 25.

First-year Tobi Ojo of Regina certainly made quite the impression in the first Canada West action of his young career, scoring the game-winning goal in the 75th minute and adding an insurance marker ten minutes later.

Gabriel Buatois and Tyler Redl rounded out the scoring for Saskatchewan by finding the back of the net in the 35th and 58th minute respectively.

Another first-year, Nikolas Baikas, also came out of the gates ready to make a statement. The forward from Saskatoon recorded three assists on the day.

It was a resilient effort for the Huskies, who found themselves trailing the Dinos on two separate occasions in the game. Saskatchewan was always quick to respond however, with an equalizing goal coming within seven minutes both times.

Returning to the Huskies roster after taking a season off to focus on medical school, goalkeeper Greg Buckley showed few signs of rust in recording eight saves in the victory.

Calgary's opening score came courtesy Dominik Zuczek, whose solo effort got past Buckley 27 minutes into the contest. That lead lasted just eight minutes as the Huskies took advantage of miscues by the Dinos, with Buatois drawing even in the 35th minute, and it was 1-1 at the half.

The Dinos struck again in the early stages of the second half, with Leonardo Culina taking a feed from Jared Fillo, then turning and bending a beautiful goal into the top right corner to make it 2-1. Again, however, that lead was short-lived as Redl snuck behind the Calgary defenders and put away a Baikas feed to tie it at 2-2, setting the stage for Ojo's late-game surge.

The Huskies took their first lead in the 75th minute as Ojo took a nice feed from Baikas, stepped to his right, and buried it low off the left post to out the visitors in front. Less than 10 minutes later, Ojo parked himself in front of Dinos goalkeeper Jake Ruschkowski and one-timed a Mason Ogoke pass just inside the left post to make it 4-2.

The Huskies will stay in Calgary after the victory, where they will continue their Canada West campaign against the Mount Royal Cougars tomorrow, Aug. 26, in a game slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
