SASKATOON – A lot can change over the course of a football season and that has never been more true than for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in 2018.
Originally pegged sixth in the Canada West Coaches Pre-Season Poll, earning the last place vote from every team in the conference, the Huskies have spent the entire season overcoming adversity and proving exactly where they will belong in the conference pecking order.
After a 5-3 regular season, good enough for third in the conference, the Huskies went on the road last weekend and rode out wild swings of momentum to capture a 31-28 overtime victory over the UBC Thunderbirds.
Their reward for that victory over UBC is the chance to continue doing what they have been doing all season long, proving people wrong.
The Huskies now have their sights set on the Hardy Cup, where they will play for the conference championship for the first time since 2009.
Standing in their way is the biggest obstacle they will have faced all season, a 9-0 Calgary Dinos team that has already defeated the Huskies twice in the regular season.
Going on the road and playing the Dinos in McMahon Stadium, the Huskies will get their chance to pull off the upset and advance to the Mitchell Bowl when the game gets underway at 2:00 p.m.
5 Things
1: The Huskies are back in the Hardy Cup for the first time since 2009 and will be looking to claim their first CW Championship since 2006.
2:
Bowan Lewis was named the CW Defensive Player of the Week for his 10.5 tackle effort against UBC last week.
3: The Huskies and Dinos have combined for 35 Hardy Cups. 18 for Saskatchewan and 17 for Calgary.
4: Four Huskies were named to the CW All-Star team.
Tyler Chow,
Tristian Koronkiewicz,
Evan Machibroda and
Mattland Riley.
5: Only three Hardy Cups have gone to overtime and two of those three involved the Huskies and Dinos.
By the Numbers
2 –
Tyler Chow scored as many rushing touchdowns in the playoff win over UBC as he did in the entire regular season.
29 – In the two games the teams played this season, the Dinos have outscored the Huskies by a combined 29 points.
9 – Calgary has hosted the past nine Hardy Cups.
18 – The Huskies' 18 Hardy Cups are the most in conference history.
Scouting the Dinos
Calgary dominated the 2018 regular season in Canada West football, finishing either first or second in 13 major statistical team categories.
The Dinos were rewarded for their 8-0 regular season record with a conference-high 11 All-Stars.
Adam Sinagra's 3,233 passing yards this season set a new Canada West and U SPORTS single-season record.
Catching those passes from Sinagra were a number of Dinos with six receivers topping 300 yards on the season.
The Dinos can also hurt you with their defence, they led the league with 17 sacks and 4 defensive TD's.
