Huskies earn weekend sweep with 1-0 win over Cougars

Oct. 7 ( Saskatchewan Huskies 1, Regina Cougars 0) U of R Soccer Field

REGINA, Sask. - In an identical result to Saturday's match, the University of Saskatchewan women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon at the U of R Field.

The hero for the Huskies was Kalli Cowles, as the third-year defender netted a header in the 41st minute. The Huskies were awarded a corner and the cross came into the box from McKenna Olson. Cowles was able to fight through traffic in front of the Cougar net and get a head on the ball, putting it into the goal for her first of the season.

Regina had a number of chances to find the goal, but was unable to convert. Brianna Wright had a good chance in the 22nd minute, cruising down the right wing before unleashing a shot that narrowly missed the top corner.

The Huskies nearly got on the board in the 33rd minute, as Taniel Gay's chip shot hit the crossbar before Kylie Bolton was able to recover and dive on the loose ball.

There was a wild scramble in front of the Huskie net just before the 80th minute, with Wright putting a shot on goal that was stopped but mishandled by keeper Hope Pelk. The rebound ended up with Sydney Langen but her shot dinged the crossbar. Nikita Senko scooped it up and tried to put another shot on goal but her attempt was blocked by a sprawling Huskie defender.

Regina's last attempt to tie the game came in the 88th minute as Tylor Bubnick teed up a free kick. The attempt from just outside the box sailed inches over the crossbar, and the Huskies were able to kill off the rest of the clock.

The Cougars had nine shots on the match, with five hitting their target. Saskatchewan countered with eight efforts and four on goal.

Regina was whistled for 11 fouls on the match while all seven Huskie fouls came in the second half.

The Cougars (2-7-1) and Huskies (2-4-4) will both be at home next weekend, as the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds will visit each team.
