With strong defence, the Brandon University Bobcats recorded a 3-1 (25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-19) win over the No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan couldn't seem to solve the Brandon block in the match. Daven Pascal, Matt Powell and Roy Ching combined for 16 total blocks in the match. The three also recorded 34 of the 47 kills in the match.

Both teams now sit at 5-2 in the Canada West men's volleyball standings.

The Huskies had the lead for the majority of the first set until an attack error and a Bobcats service ace gave them a 23-21 lead. Middle Tyler Epp pulled the Huskies back within one on the next play, but a service error followed by a long attack sealed a 25-22 Brandon win. 

Brandon took control of the the second set leading the entire game. A Pascall kill ended it 25-17.

Saskatchewan found its stride tied at 18-18 in the third game. Colin Fraser went on a service run that featured an ace, two Andrew Nelson kills and a kill of his own to give the Huskies the 25-18 win. 

Tied at nine in the fourth set, the Bobcats began to break away and scored the next five points. The Huskies couldn't erase the large deficit dropping the set 25-19. 

Nelson led the Huskies with 16 kills, followed by Fraser with 12. Libero Etienne Hagenbuch recorded 12 digs, while rookie setter Derek Epp had 42 assists.

Ching led the Bobcats with 14 kills, while Powell tallied 11. Jeremy Davies added 12 digs in the match.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. Match time is set for 8 p.m.
