Box Score SASKATOON – For the second straight season the Trinity Western University Spartans knocked of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 1-0 in a Canada West semfinal.
Trinity Western defeated the Huskies 1-0 Saturday afternoon on Field 7 in the second semifinal of the Canada West Select Six, handing the Huskies their first home loss in two seasons in the process. The Spartans won by the same score in the 2014 conference semifinal at home in Langley B.C.
In a tightly contested game, it took 85 minutes for either side to get on the board. Vanessa Kovacs scored the game winner after a ball deflected into the box from a corner kick. Krista Gommeringer sent a low ball in on a corner kick towards the top of the penalty area. A ricochet off of a Huskie defender resulted in the ball redirecting towards the net where Kovacs would finish it off past a challenging Kyleigh Vause.
Saskatchewan challenged for the equalizer in the closing five minutes and in added time, which was lengthy due to substitutions and second half injuries. Erica Hindmarsh sent a high arching corner kick into the box where Leesa Eggum headed the ball to the top of the net. Ally Williamson came up with the biggest of her five saves in the match to deflect the ball off the crossbar and over the net.
Again in added time, Saskatchewan nearly squared the match up. Hindmarsh sent a second corner kick in towards the back post over a leaping Williamson. The Huskies had a chance to tie it up but a trio of Spartans made a wall to keep the ball out.
Trinity Western would continue to use as much clock as possible while in control of the ball to hold on for the one goal victory.
The Spartans advance to the Canada West Championship Sunday at 1:15 p.m. against the UBC Thunderbirds. Saskatchewan will meet the Calgary Dinos in the bronze medal match at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will advance with the Spartans and T-Birds to the CIS Championship next week in Vancouver.
