HUSKIES FINISH THIRD IN STANDINGS

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 52-24 Friday night at GriffithsStadium in Saskatoon’s PotashCorp Park in their final Canada West regular season game.
 
Saskatchewan’s four first half touchdowns on helped the Huskies clinch third place in the Canada West standings. Saskatchewan will now face Regina in a Canada West semifinal next weekend.
 
Huskies rookie pivot Drew Burko connected with Charlie Power and the first half Mitch Stevens, while tailback Shane Buchanan and pivot Chase Bradshaw both punched in one-yard touchdowns in the second quarter giving the Huskies a 31-10 lead at halftime.

“We reached our objective,” said Huskie head coach Brian Towriss.  “We wanted to go 3-0 in the second half of the season and we did that.”
 
Burko threw for 321 yards going 20-for-29 including three touchdowns and two interceptions. Backup Chase Bradshaw saw limited action completing two passes on seven attempts for 17 yards.
 
Stevens led the receiving corps hauling in six passes for 117 yards including two touchdowns. Jeff Moore added 85 receiving yards on five catches, while Charlie Power caught three passes for 55 yards and a touchdown.
 
On the ground, the Huskies were led by Buchanan who tallied 86 yards and one touchdown on 13 touches. Jarvis James ran for an impressive 69 yards and one touchdown on three carries.
 
In his final CIS game, UBC pivot Billy Greene moved to third all-time in Canada West passing yards finishing his career with 8,626 yards. Greene passed University of Calgary Greg Vavra (1979-83) who tallied 8,401.Greene completed 29-of-44 passes for 304 yards in Friday’s game including two touchdowns and two interceptions.
 
Greene spread the ball around completing receptions with nine different players. Patrick Bull led the T-Birds receivers bringing in 10 passes for 103 yards and one touchdown. Micha Theil and Jordan Grieve were also popular targets for the Thunderbirds pivots finishing with six receptions for 55 yards and four receptions for 60 yards respectively.
 
Brandon Deschamps was a workhorse on the ground for the Thunderbirds tallying 110 yards on 18 carries. Lucas Spanguolo punched in the lone rushing touchdown for the T-Birds while adding 22 yards on six carries.
 
Luke Thiel led the Huskies’ defence recording 9.5 tackles, while Mitch Friesen had a snatched two interceptions, 5.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.
 
The Thunderbirds were led defensively by Bryan Rideout and Domenic Mercuri who recorded 6.5 tackles and 5 tackles respectively.
 
With the win the Huskies finish the regular season at  5-3, while UBC finishes the season at 2-6.
 
The Canada West semifinal is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. in Regina’s Mosaic Stadium.
 
Game Notes: The Huskies honoured fifth-year athletes Mitch Friesen, Corbin Eskelson, Braden George, Bryce McCall and David Rybinski in a pregame ceremony.
