Late First-Half Comeback Undone in 4-2 Loss to Thompson Rivers

Box Score SASKATOON, Sask. — The Saskatchewan Huskies erased a two-goal deficit before halftime, but two quick second-half goals from the Thompson Rivers WolfPack proved to be the difference in a 4-2 setback Sunday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Griffiths Stadium.

Thompson Rivers struck first midway through the opening half when Kaelin Nguyen found the back of the net in the 17th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. The WolfPack doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark as Ben Finley scored his first goal of the season, putting Saskatchewan in a two-goal hole.

The Huskies responded in impressive fashion late in the half however.

After generating several promising opportunities, fifth-year forward Tao Hein got Saskatchewan on the board in the 41st minute. Hein, who finished with a team-high four shots, popped the ball up and over the TRU goalkeeper before connecting on a header for his fifth goal of the campaign.

The momentum continued to swing in the Huskies' favour as the first half wound down. In the final minute before the break, A.J. Calado converted off a feed from Dante Molina to level the score at 2-2. The goal was Calado's first of his Huskie career and capped a spirited Saskatchewan comeback heading into halftime.

However, Thompson Rivers answered immediately after the restart.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Aiden Muzio restored the WolfPack lead before Lachlan Will added another less than four minutes later, extending the advantage to 4-2. Those two goals ultimately stood as the game-winners as Saskatchewan was unable to find a response despite pushing for a breakthrough over the final 35 minutes.

The Huskies generated nine shots on the afternoon, with four reaching target. Hein led the attack with two shots on goal, while Calado and Molina each recorded a point in the effort. Goalkeeper Jaron Slopinski made four saves in the loss.

Saskatchewan pressed for a late comeback, earning three second-half corner kicks and creating several dangerous moments in the attacking third. Thompson Rivers goalkeeper Toran Rutherford turned aside two shots to preserve the lead as the WolfPack improved to 5-3-0 on the season.

With the result, the Huskies moved to 3-4-0 in conference play and will look to bounce back as they head on the road next week for a pair of matches in British Columbia.
