SASKATOON, Sask. — The Saskatchewan Huskies earned a hard-fought point on home turf Sunday (Sept. 13), battling the Manitoba Bisons to a 1-1 draw in a match that featured strong defending, timely goalkeeping, and a set-piece goal from the Green and White.
The Huskies got off to the perfect start in the sixth minute. Midfielder
Hazel Turnbull delivered a dangerous corner kick into the penalty area, where
Cassidy Vieira rose above the crowd and powered a header into the back of the net. The early goal showed early signs of another strong result, with the Huskies also opening the scoring early in yesterday's 3-0 win over the Bisons.
However, Manitoba responded well and nearly found an equalizer midway through the first half. In the 15th minute, a Bison attacker broke down the wing and generated a dangerous opportunity, but Huskie goalkeeper
Julie Snider came up with a crucial save. Making her first appearance of the season, Snider showed confidence and composure to preserve Saskatchewan's early advantage.
The visitors continued to push forward and eventually broke through in the 31st minute. Following a corner kick, Manitoba worked the ball inside the penalty area, sending a centering pass into the box. A Bison attacker connected with a header that found the back of the net, leveling the match at 1-1.
The remainder of the contest was tightly contested, with both teams battling for control through the midfield and limiting clear-cut scoring chances. Saskatchewan's back line stood firm against Manitoba's pressure while looking to create opportunities of its own going forward.
Vieira's goal highlighted the Huskies' effectiveness on set pieces, while Turnbull's service from the corner provided the key attacking moment for the home side. Snider's first-half save also proved significant, helping Saskatchewan maintain momentum during a period when Manitoba was beginning to generate offensive pressure.
Although neither side was able to find a breakthrough after the Bisons' equalizer, the Huskies showed resilience throughout the match and earned a valuable valuable against a divisional opponent.
Saskatchewan will now look to build on a strong weekend when they return to Griffiths Stadium in a week's time for matches against the Calgary Dinos (Sat., Sept. 19) and MRU Cougars (Sun., Sept. 20).
