Sorensen the Overtime Hero as Huskies Sweep Bears, Advance to Canada West Semifinal

SASKATOON, Sask. — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies prevailed in thrilling fashion over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night (Feb. 21) at Merlis Belsher Place, earning a 3-2 overtime victory and punching their ticket to the Canada West semifinal.

Keaton Sorensen played the role of overtime hero, netting the game-winner at the 9:45 mark of the extra frame in Game 2 to complete the best-of-three quarterfinal sweep of their longtime cross-provincial rival. Skating primarily on the Huskies' fourth line, Sorensen's clutch marker was his first of the playoffs and just his second of the season.

"Yeah, like Sorensen, he's a guy who hasn't really had things go as planned for him this year, but he got an opportunity the last few days and he's a great player," said Huskies head coach Brandin Cote. "You never know when it's going to be your moment, when the next guy is going to step up, and that was a huge goal by him tonight."

Alongside Sorensen's heroics, Huskies goaltender Nolan Maier delivered another strong performance between the pipes. The Yorkton, Sask., product provided a calming presence for Saskatchewan through more than 70 minutes, turning aside 28 shots while making key saves at pivotal moments — including two while the Bears were shorthanded in the second period.

"Yeah, I mean, he made some big saves at key times," said Cote. "As a coach, it's calming to have him back there, knowing your goaltender is going to give you a chance to win."

After a shutout performance in Game 1, Maier now boasts a .967 save percentage through his first two career playoff starts.

For Alberta, the result marks the first time in program history the Golden Bears have bowed out in the Canada West quarterfinal. Despite the early playoff exit, however, the Bears refused to go quietly in Game 2.

Trailing 2-0 for nearly two periods after goals from Conner Roulette and Josh Pillar put the Huskies ahead, the Bears dug in and responded late in the second. Aiden Yakimchuk netted Alberta's first goal with 13 seconds remaining in the frame, cutting the deficit in half and injecting life into his squad heading into the intermission.

Carrying that momentum into the third, the Bears continued to press, dictating play with strong defensive structure and sustained offensive-zone pressure. Meanwhile, netminder Drew Sim stood tall, turning aside Huskies shooters to keep Alberta within striking distance. His effort proved critical, setting the stage for late-game drama.

With Alberta on the power play and a sixth attacker on the ice, a shot from Tyson Laventure deflected off Maier's pad and landed on the stick of Justin Hall, who buried the tying goal with 51 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Ultimately, however, Sorensen's late-game heroics outlasted those of the Golden Bears. The third-year forward backhanded a rebound over a sprawling Sim to seal the victory and send Saskatchewan on to the next round.

Saskatchewan will now travel to Vancouver to face the top-seeded UBC Thunderbirds in a best-of-three semifinal series beginning Feb. 26.
