Huskies Blank Golden Bears 5–0 to Take Game 1 of Canada West Quarterfinal Series

SASKATOON, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies turned in a stellar performance Friday night (Feb. 20) at Merlis Belsher Place, blanking the visiting Alberta Golden Bears 5-0 to take Game 1 of their best-of-three Canada West quarter-final series.

Saskatchewan's victory was propelled by strong performances at both ends of the ice, but it was Huskies netminder Nolan Maier who earned first-star honours in the shutout win. Maier stood tall through 60 minutes, making timely saves and turning aside all 30 shots he faced to record his first career playoff shutout. Since joining the Huskies mid-season, Maier has collected seven wins in nine appearances, including Friday's performance.

"As advertised," said Huskies head coach Brandin Cote when asked about Maier's effort. "Obviously a benefit to have him back there, and he was dialed in tonight."

Offensively, the Huskies were led by veteran Chantz Petruic and rookie Conner Roulette. Petruic, who finished the regular season tied for the Canada West lead in goals, added two more in Game 1, bringing his combined season total to 20. Meanwhile, Roulette continued his strong rookie campaign with a goal and two assists in the win. Liam Keeler added one, and Jarrett Penner rounded out the scoring for the Dogs with a notable shorthanded goal in the second period.

After dropping their final two regular-season games, the Huskies came out with playoff urgency early in the first period. Roulette opened the series scoring just two minutes in, firing a shot off the rush past Ethan Kruger for a 1-0 advantage. The physicality ramped up midway through the frame, with Saskatchewan assessed back-to-back cross-checking minors. However, Alberta was unable to capitalize on either power-play opportunity, and the Huskies carried their one-goal lead into the first intermission.

With the Bears back on the power play early in the second, the visitors pressed for the equalizer. Instead, a stolen puck by Ethan Regnier at the Huskies' blue line allowed the fourth-year forward to break in on a two-on-one before sliding the puck across to Penner for the shorthanded marker. Midway through the period, a quick transition play set up Petruic to skate in and snipe his first of the night past Kruger, prompting a goaltending change as Drew Sim entered in relief for Alberta.

Saskatchewan continued to apply pressure in the third. Keeler slipped the puck five-hole past Sim for the Huskies' fourth unanswered goal before Petruic capped the five-goal performance with a one-timer off a feed from Roulette with less than a minute remaining.

Despite the convincing win, Petruic knows the Golden Bears will be motivated in Game 2.

"Alberta's got a good team and they're going to push. The second game is always the hardest to close out, and they're well coached over there, so they're going to be ready to go. I didn't really think we played nearly as well as we could have, and I think we're going to take a step tomorrow."

Game 2 of the quarter-final series is set for 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night (Feb. 21) at Merlis Belsher Place.
