Huskies’ Offence Stays Hot in 6–2 Win Over Alberta

SASKATOON, Sask. — After a seven-goal performance the night before, the USPORTS No. 4-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies followed up with another offensive outburst Saturday night (Jan. 24) at Merlis Belsher Place, cruising to a 6–2 victory over the visiting Alberta Golden Bears to complete the weekend sweep.

Saskatchewan boasts a top-three offence in Canada West, averaging 4.52 goals per game, and the Huskies showed why on Saturday as 16 players found their way onto the scoresheet. Six different Huskies recorded goals, with Josh Pillar, Ethan Regnier, Logan Bairos, Chase Bertholet, Liam Keeler and Dawson Holt each lighting the lamp.

Rounding out the scoring, Noah Boyko and Sam Popowich found the back of the net for Alberta in the losing effort.

The win improves Saskatchewan's record to 16-4-2 in 2025–26 as the Huskies continue to battle in a top-heavy East Division, with Mount Royal, Calgary and Saskatchewan locked in a three-way tie atop the standings. It also marks the Huskies' fifth consecutive victory over their longtime rivals, with their last loss to the Bears coming in a 4–2 road defeat on Nov. 22 of last season.

Alberta drops to 9-9-4 on the year but has already clinched a playoff spot, sitting third in the four-team West Division.

Similar to Friday night's matchup, the Bears opened the scoring less than five minutes into the first period as Boyko finished off a crisp passing play to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. However, the Huskies responded emphatically, striking for three goals in a span of under five minutes during the middle portion of the frame. Pillar kick-started the surge just 30 seconds after the opening goal, pouncing on a loose puck in front. Regnier and Bairos followed 68 seconds apart to cap the barrage and give Saskatchewan a two-goal cushion after the first.

Riding the momentum, the Huskies added to their lead early in the second period. Just past the one-minute mark, Bertholet netted the lone goal of the frame for Saskatchewan after a feed from Chance Petruic behind the net allowed the second-year forward to one-time the puck past Bears goaltender Ethan Kruger. However, Alberta answered midway through the period on the power play after Keeler was assessed a rare two-minute minor for a faceoff violation. Despite Saskatchewan's Canada West-leading penalty kill (83.5%), Popowich converted with the man advantage to give the Bears some life heading into the third.

Protecting a 4–2 lead, the Huskies leaned on their defence to close out the final 20 minutes. Backed by a stout Saskatchewan blue line, netminder Nolan Maier faced just five shots in the third period, helping the former Saskatoon Blade record his fourth win in as many starts since arriving from the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads earlier this month.

With Alberta pressing late and Kruger on the bench for the extra attacker, the Huskies sealed the win. Keeler buried an empty-net goal from beyond the Saskatchewan blue line before Holt added his 11th of the season at five-on-five, capping off the 6–2 victory.

The Huskies now turn their attention to the Regina Cougars, with the intraprovincial rivals  hosting each other for a home-and-home series beginning Jan. 30.
