EDMONTON, Alta. - On the road for the first time this season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie tack & field teams continued their strong start to the 2025-26 campaign. The Huskies brought home 17 total podium finishes at the 2026 Golden Bears Open in Edmonton which was highlighted by four gold medal performances from the USask women.
Of the four first-place efforts, two came from fifth-year
Hannah Hagerty. Friday night the former Regina Cougar topped the women's long jump podium, recording a leap of 6.26m on her fifth attempt, a distance that would prove to be over half a meter (55cm) further than the field. In addition to being good enough for first-place, her distance also surpassed the U SPORTS Auto Qualification Standard of 5.98m and was just one centimeter shy of the Huskie program record set by Vanessa Monar in 1990.
Hagerty continued her outstanding weekend on Saturday in the women's 60m. After finishing third in both the prelims (7.55) and semifinals (7.53), she ran a blistering 7.44 seconds to cross the finish line first. Simiarily to her long jump performance, Hangerty set the second-fastest 60m dash time the program has seen, coming within one hundredth of a second of current record holder Gracie Anderson.
The two other Saskatchewan first-place finishes each came in the relay events, with both the women's 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams topping the podium. In the 4x200m the Huskie squad crossed the finish line over four seconds faster than the second place Bisons with a time of 1:37.68, the fastest time recorded in the nation so far this season. In the final event of the weekend, the Dogs once again topped the podium.
Jaedyn McLaughlin,
Emma Egert,
Grace Igbiki, and
Hannah Hagerty combined for a time of 3:48.46, over five seconds faster than the Alberta Pandas who took second. Their outstanding time not only won the event but exceed the U SPORTS Auto Qualification Standard of 3:52.15 by just over three seconds.
On the men's side, freshman
Niklos Irwin highlighted the weekend with an exciting finish in the men's 600m. The local Saskatoon product crossed the finish line in second-place thanks to a time of 1:18.89, just under three tenths of second behind Alberta's Clay Grattidge who claimed first-place. The rookie also earned U SPORTS Auto Qualification Standard with his time and set the fourth-fastest time in program history.Â
Three other Huskie student-athletes made their way into the programs top-10 performances.
Nathan Pinno, last week's Canada West Track & Field Player of the Week, did so in the shot put with a toss of 16.44m, good enough for fourth, while
Joshua Tam secured the seventh-most points in the heptathlon (4,741) and
Kendyl Dziadyk ran an 8.52 in the 60m hurdles for the tenth-fastest time by a Huskie.
Saskatchewan now returns to their home track at the Saskatoon Field House for the 2026 Edition of the Knights of Columbus Indoor Games, set to take place from Friday, January 23 to Saturday, January 24.Â
