LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - The University of Saskatchewan huskies picked up a second consecutive win Friday night (Jan. 16) on the road in Lethbridge, defeating the Pronghorns 80-75 thanks to an impressive second half effort.
The Pronghorns lead at the first half break 40-36. In a tight first half the Pronghorns free throw shooting was what gave them the advantage as they made 75% of their shots at the charity stripe. The Horns also displayed a strong transition game early, owning a 7-0 lead in fast break points.
The Huskies countered with efficient field shooting, connecting on 43% of attempts, but struggled at the line and made just 46% of shots off fouls.
Joe Lemieux was the Horns standout player in the first 20 minutes of play as he totaled 13 points with five coming from the free throw line. Kymani Pollard tied the team lead with 13 of his own.
Easton Thimm lead the Huskies at the half with 12 points on an efficient 5-8 from the field, while
Mohamed Jabateh chipped in with 7.
The Horns couldn't find their shooting touch in the second half, shooting just 39% from the field while giving up 14 second chance points, allowing the Huskies to recover from the halftime deficit.
The game was dominated by play under the basket, with the two teams combining for just 13 triples. Saskatchewan held the advantaged though, with 40 points coming from inside the paint to the pronghorns 38.
Joe Lemieux finished the game with 26 points on 9-15 shooting for the home team and was backed up by Kymani Pollard who had 18 and shot 70% from the free throw line.
Easton Thimm had 22 for the Huskies on 8-13 from the field, adding 13 rebounds for his 8th double-double of the season.
Mohamed Jabateh had 13 on 6-9 shooting.
The Huskies will look for the weekend sweep tomorrow (Jan. 17) at 7pm at the Co-op centre for Sport and Wellness.
