EDMONTON, Alta. - Habib Assem and Frankroy Cain both scored in the second half to lift the Alberta Golden Bears to a 2-0 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
It was a game largely dominated by the Golden Bears, who outshot, outcornered, and outchanced the Huskies on a gloomy day at Foote Field. They leave the weekend behind with an overall 2-1-2 record, which is good for third in the Prairie Division. Assem and Cain were instrumental in the win, but also having a good game was Prince Amanda who was crucial to the attack in the 75 minutes he played.
The Huskies move to 0-3-1 after a draw and a loss this weekend, and sit in last place in the division. They saw a standout performance from rookie
Mateo Figueiredo, who tied for a game-high of four shots, and was a lone star in the Huskies front line. Keeper
Jaron Slopinski was also stellar, saving seven of nine shots on target.
Both teams were fans of the long ball early, as the sides punted clearances and long passes for the first 20 minutes and were unsuccessful at catching the opposition sleeping for some very conservative soccer early on. However, the Bears were able to get back-to-back phenomenal chances off the boots of Prince Amanda and Frankroy Cain around the 35th-minute that were parried by Huskies keeper
Jaron Slopinski who was phenomenal in the first half, stopping all four Alberta shots on target. Rookie
Mateo Figueiredo was stellar for the Huskies, hitting a team high three shots and one on target that was close to finding twine, though the visitors would also be scoreless with the teams headed to the half with a 0-0 score.
The Bears threatened early in the second half, leading to a penalty call in the 50th-minute which was promptly housed by Assem for his second of the year, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. Saskatchewan was close to equalizing off the boot of Figueiredo in the 61st-minute, but a ball that beat keeper Trystan Read did not beat the outstretched leg of Harry Malhi, who surely saved a goal and the lead with a tremendous effort. They were not done on the offensive side either, as just 10 minutes later Frankroy Cain potted his first of the year on a fortuitous bounce after a substitution from the Huskies, which would make the game 2-0. After changes up front from the home side, they continued to pile on the pressure, with the bench adding three shots on target in the last 20 minutes, but Slopinski was able to hold everything as the Bears finished this one 2-0.
The Bears go on a BC sabbatical next week, as they face the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and the Victoria Vikes on Sunday for their first trip out west this year. Saskatchewan follows them as they take on the UNBC next Friday, before a Sunday date with the 'TBirds.
