SASKATOON, Sask. -
Anton Amundrud led an impressive air assault, completing 26 of 38 passes for 443 yards and four touchdowns as the Saskatchewan Huskies cruised to a 51-14 victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds Friday night (Sep. 5) at Griffiths Stadium.
In front of 9,551 Huskie faithful, the Dogs' offence exploded in their home opener, totaling 660 yards of total offence and five touchdowns, leading to a 2-0 start for Saskatchewan in the early goings of the 2025 Canada West season. The result also marks Saskatchewan's second consecutive win over UBC after the Huskies emerged victorious in their Canada West Semifinal clash against the T-Birds last season.
For UBC, the loss drops the T-Birds record to 1-1 after defeating the Manitoba Bisons 21-9 in their week one opener.
After a pair of
Lukas Scott field goals put Saskatchewan in front 6-0 through the first quarter, Amundrud and top receiver,
Daniel Wiebe kicked off the Huskies' air raid in style. On only the second play of the drive, Amundrud found Wiebe deep down field for a 79-yard TD strike, putting the Dogs up 13-0.
Later in the second frame, and after a third Scott field goal saw the Huskies extend their lead, the UBC offence found their footing as UBC quarterback Drew Viotto led the T-Birds on an 8-play, 85-yard drive culminating in a 33-yard touchdown pass to Mark Webb, cutting the lead to 16-7.
However, as time wound down in the first half, the Dogs turned to their rushing attack to bolster the lead. With just under three minutes remaining, Huskies' running back
Ryker Frank snapped off a 79-yard run deep into UBC territory. The play proved to be the longest run of the night, but Saskatchewan was unable to capitalize with a major score as the UBC defence held firm on the next series of plays, forcing Saskatchewan to settle for a field goal.
A late interception by Huskies' linebacker
Jacob Goldstone gave the Dogs a chance to further their first half lead, but the T-Birds defence once again prevented Saskatchewan from capitalizing, holding the score 19-7 at the half.
Coming out of the break, the Dogs offence was hungry for more and after some strong Saskatchewan defensive play forced UBC to concede a safety, Amundrud and company began their second half assault.
Just over five minutes into the third quarter, the Huskies field general completed passes to three different receivers, eventually capping off a 70-yard drive with a 7-yard pass to Wiebe for his second receiving touchdown of the night and boosting the Dogs' lead to 28-7. The 2024 Canada West All-Star and CFL draft pick would go on to finish his night with a game-high nine receptions and 195 receiving yards.
After a Javin Boyton 2-yard touchdown run capped off the third quarter to make the score 35-7, the Amundrud air attack and the Huskies offence continued to pile on as the game entered the final frame.
The next two Saskatchewan possessions saw the fourth-year quarterback lead ten- and six-play drives, culminating in touchdown passes to
Dawson Lennea and
Aulain Penner, putting the Dogs firmly in the driver's seat. For Penner, the touchdown was a special one as it marked the rookie running back's first major score of his U SPORTS career.
From there, the UBC offence would add a late fourth quarter touchdown, but the Huskies were too much on this night as Saskatchewan would add another two points on a safety and cruise to a 51-14 victory.
Saskatchewan will now set their sights on the Manitoba Bisons in week three as the Dogs travel to Winnipeg in hopes of staying perfect on the season. Kickoff is set for Saturday, September 13th at 4:00 PM.
