SASKATOON, Sask. -
Cheyenne Lehmann scored twice and Saskatchewan earned their second clean sheet of the season, powering the Huskies to a 2-0 victory over the visiting MacEwan Griffins on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at Griffiths Stadium.
In a match that saw Saskatchewan donning powder blue kits for their annual Play for a Cure game in support of cancer research, the Huskies controlled play on both ends of the pitch. Saskatchewan registered 16 total shots (six on target) while limiting MacEwan to just three attempts (two on target) over ninety minutes.Â
Riding the momentum of back-to-back wins over Manitoba, the result marks Saskatchewan's third consecutive victory and improves their record to 5-4 on the season—good for fourth place in the Prairie Division. For MacEwan, the loss drops them to 5-3-1, as the Griffins now cling to a narrow one-point edge over the Huskies for third.
In the early first half minutes, Saskatchewan nearly opened the scoring in the 15th after a crisp passing sequence found
Marie Kilcher in behind the defence. On a beautiful through-ball from
Jenna Steacy, Kilcher broke free and unleashed a shot that beat Griffins keeper Sabrina Alexander—but not the goalpost—keeping the match level.
As the first half progressed, the Huskies continued to press. Saskatchewan recorded three total shots and earned three corner kicks, but MacEwan's backline remained resilient, and the teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless draw.
Coming out of the break, the Huskies wasted little time in the second half picking up where they left off. In the 50th minute, veteran
Cheyenne Lehmann broke the deadlock after
Isabelle Lachance sprinted up the left flank and delivered a perfectly placed cross to the near post. Lehmann beat her defender and headed it home for her second goal of the season, giving Saskatchewan a 1-0 lead.
Through the middle stages of the half, the Huskies kept up the pressure. Lehmann,
Cassidy Vieira,
Daraida Sutherland,
Madison Mayert, and
Tia Lecox each generated high-quality scoring chances, but none could beat Alexander.
The breakthrough finally came again in the 69th minute. After
Madison Mayert was brought down in the box by Griffins defender Selynna Simao, Saskatchewan was awarded a penalty. Lehmann stepped up to the spot and calmly slotted the ball inside the right post for her second goal of the game and third of the season, doubling the Huskies' lead to 2-0.
Lehmann came close to her first career hat trick just minutes later in the 73rd, when she found space just outside the six-yard box, but her shot sailed narrowly over the bar.Â
With time winding down, MacEwan pushed forward desperately as the Griffins earned a pair of late corners, but Saskatchewan's defence held firm, clearing both threats.
MacEwan's final opportunity came in the 90th minute, when Amelia Russo fired a shot on goal, but Huskies goalkeeper Kaitlin Roberts made her second save of the afternoon to preserve the clean sheet and seal the win.
Riding the high of their season-long winning streak, the Huskies will look to maintain their momentum against the Alberta Pandas tomorrow afternoon (Sep. 28) at Griffiths Stadium. Kickoff set for 2pm. Â
