Early Score Leads Cascades to 6-2 Win Over Huskies

Box Score SASKATOON, Sask. – The UFV Cascades scored in the opening minutes of the match and never looked back, handing the University of Saskatchewan Huskies a 6-2 loss Sunday afternoon (Sept. 21).

With the win, UFV improves to 4-12 while the Huskies fall to 2-5-1.

It was a dream start for the visiting team, who recorded the game's first score just 63 seconds into the match. After a misplay from a Huskie defender, the ball found Mateo Brazinha who took off with open space towards the goal. Firing a shot from close range, the ball got past a diving Jaron Slopinski for Brazinha's sixth of the season.

Finding themselves in an early deficit, the Huskies pressed the attack and in the 15th minute were rewarded with a good look but consecutive blocks from UFV defenders kept the Cascades ahead.

As the two teams settled into the match, scoring chances were exchanged with Saskatchewan and Fraser Valley each recording four shots on goal by the end of the half.

With just minutes remaining in the frame, the Cascades jumped on another Huskie error. When Slopinski missed on an attempt to punch the ball away, UFV's Adriano Consiglio found himself in the right place at the right time for a shot into the wide-open Saskatchewan net.

Seconds later, it was Harjoven Sidhu getting on the scoreboard for the visiting team. The third-year midfielder took the ball away from Makariy Pryadko at midfield before running half the length of the pitch for his first of the season.

The second half saw a similar story to the first play out early, with the Branzinha scoring his second of the match just over three minutes in to extend the UFV lead.

The Cascades would continue adding to their total shortly after when Beckham Hatch found Ebi Igali to make it 5-0.

In the 60th minute it appeared as though the break the Huskies needed had finally arrived when Tao Hein was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Despite reading the keeper correctly, Hein recorded a rare miss, hitting the post before the ball rolled out of danger.

Six minutes later the Huskies were back in the box for another penalty kick of the match but yet again were unable to convert. This time however UFV keeper Matheus De Souza came up with the stop, turning aside Malcolm Rektor for his seventh save of the match. The rookie keeper would go on to finish the match with nine saves.

Despite a strong performance from De Souza, the Huskies finally broke through in the 70th minute. Tao Hein received a long pass from Dante Molina before making a pair of nice moves around a defender and finally slipping a shot just pass De Souza for his third of the season.

The Dogs would double down five minutes later when Ty Lee sent a centering pass to Malcolm Rektor. After Rektor's initial shot was blocked, he fired a second through traffic and into the back of the net, cutting the deficit to three.

Fraser Valley would solidify the victory on the final play of the game, with Sidhu's second of the match.

The Huskies next action comes in a week's time when the team will head to Lethbridge. The Cascades meanwhile return to British Columbia for a pair of games against the UNBC Timberwolves.
