SASKATOON, Sask. - Due to severe weather conditions Wednesday night (Aug. 20) the Huskie Football team's first action of the 2025 season was cut short. Despite the anticlimactic start to the latest campaign, the Dogs produced an impressive showing in two quarters of exhibition football, building an 18-2 lead over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds before the game was called.
It took the Huskies just four plays and 2:47 to find the endzone for the first time in 2025, with fourth-year quarterback
Anton Amundrud finding rookie pass catcher
Ethan Clazie for a 16-yard major. The drive started with veteran running back
Kayden Miller taking the opening kickoff 68-yards to setup the Saskatchewan offence in plus territory. Amundrud would then find All-Canadian receiver and 2025 CFL Draft pick
Daniel Wiebe for a 27-yard strike to set up the eventual third-and-goal touchdown.
The following drive saw UBC take the ball down to the Huskie 5-yardline before
Lucas Scheck intercepted a Derek Engel pass. Scheck took the ball 65-yards in the opposite direction, once again setting up the USask offence in T-Bird territory.
The following Saskatchewan possession saw Amundrud lead the second scoring drive of the game, ending in an 11-yard touchdown to fifth-year receiver
Rhett Vavra. Vavra finished the game as the team's second-leading receiver with 33 yards and a major, trailing only
Ethan Clazie who closed out the contest with 53 yards. A kickoff through the endzone would make it a 15-0 game at the end of the first frame.
The second quarter saw the Huskies continue to extend their lead, with second-year kicker
Lukas Scott connecting on a 27-yard field goal to give the Dogs a commanding 18-0 advantage.
The Thunderbirds only score of the evening would come soon after, with the Huskies being forced to surrender a safety from deep in the own territory.
Amunrdrud finished as game's the leading passer, connecting on 10-of-13 attempts for 110 yards and two touchdowns, besting UBC's Derek Engel who recorded 105 yards and an interception. Second-year field general
Jake Farrell was the only other USask quarterback to see the field in the shortened matchup, going 5-for-10 for 73 yards and an interception.
On the ground,
Javin Boynton led the Dogs with 32 yards on three attempts while Caleb Yang led the T-Birds with 18 rushing yards.
The Huskies next action comes in just over a week's time, with the Dogs set to travel to Edmonton for their 2025 season-opener against the Alberta Golden Bears. Following Week 1 action, the Huskies return home for the latest edition of USask Homecoming, with the UBC Thunderbirds scheduled to return to Griffiths Stadium.
