Huskies Open U SPORTS Track & Field Championships With Strong Start on Day 1

WINDSOR, Ont. - The first day of the 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships is in the books, and the Huskies positioned themselves well for a day two medal push. In the team standings, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Track & Field team has yet to register a point with no athletes competing in day one medal events but strong showings in the Women's 600m, and 4x200m, as well as the Men's Heptathlon, have set the team up for day two events.

Leading the women's standings are the Guelph Gryphons with 31 points, followed by the Western Mustangs with 21, and the host Windsor Lancers with 17. On the men's side, Western leads the Manitoba Bisons by one, 14 to 13 points, while Guelph rounds out the top three with nine.

For the USask women, Avery Pearson and the 4x200m relay team highlighted Day 1 after both qualified for their respective finals on Saturday. Pearson ran a time of 1:31.03 in the 600m, winning her heat with the second fastest time in the event, trailing only Western's Favour Okpali (1:29.74), the 2025 U SPORTS Track Athlete of the Year. In the 4x200m, Grace Igbiki, Paige Willems, Hannah Hagerty, and Selena Keyowski combined for the fastest time in the prelims, running 1:38.24, over seven tenths faster than the second-place Guelph Gryphons.

The women's 600m finals are scheduled for 1:15 PM CST on Saturday (Mar. 8), while the 4x200m finals will follow just after at 2:15 PM CST.

On the men's side, just three athletes saw competition in Michael Hussey, Jake Neufeld, and Logan Kok.

Hussey, competing in his first national championships, claimed 7th in the men's 600m after missing out on the finals by just two tenths of a second.  Meanwhile, Neufeld and Kok saw plenty of action in the heptathlon, with four of the seven events completed on Day 1. Neufeld earned three 7th-place finishes in the 60m dash (7.11), shot put (11.87m), and high jump (1.84m), in addition to finishing 10th in the long jump (6.33m), and currently finds himself 7th overall with 2,763 points. Kok earned top five finishes in the shot put (2nd, 12.83m) and 60m dash (5th, 7.11) while taking a share of 11th-place in the high jump (1.75m) and 13th in the long jump (6.05m) to sit 12th through four events with 2,683 points. Western's Jared Hendricks-Polack leads the men's hepathlon with 3,090 points.

Action from the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse resumes Friday (Mar. 7) at 2:30pm with the Men's Weight Throw.
