PREVIEW: Canada West Semifinal Rematch on Tap as Top-Seeded Dogs Host Cascades

SASKATOON, Sask. - Following a convincing quarter-final win over the Trinity Western Spartans last week, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie women's basketball team is set to host a Canada West Semifinal against the Fraser Valley Cascades in a rematch of last season's conference semifinal.

The U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies are back in action this weekend on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court. The top-seeded team in the conference will be looking to continue their 2025 postseason and Canada West title defence as they host the Fraser Valley Cascades in the Canada West Semifinals.

Saturday's elimination game not only serves as the Huskies and Cascades' first meeting this season but also a rematch of last year's conference semifinals, which saw the Dogs advance to the Canada West Championship with an 84-50 victory on UFV's home court. In one of several dominant games for the Huskies in last year's postseason run, it was a highly efficient outing from the Dogs (56% from the field) in addition to some stellar play in transition (19-6 fast break points) that led the 19-1 team back to the conference final.

Last year's playoff meeting was also the 11th time the two programs have met in the postseason and the 10th during the Canada West playoffs. In their lone National Championship meeting, UFV defeated the Huskies 69-57 in the 2014 U SPORTS Bronze Medal match, avenging a loss to the Dogs in the Canada West Final earlier that season.

Both programs advanced to this Saturday's game with impressive wins in the Canada West quarter-finals. Saskatchewan defeated the TWU Spartans in a dominant 83-57 victory, while the Cascades led a second-half comeback against the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Calgary Dinos, which included a 7-point, third-quarter defensive performance.

Despite UFV having a strong season in conference play this year, few teams come close to the Huskies' statistical rankings in 2024-25. The reigning Canada West champs rank ahead of the Cascades in virtually every statistical category except defensive rebounds per game (23.7 to 27.1) and blocks per game (1.8 to 4.0) and own an overall efficiency rating over double that of UFV.

For the Huskies, a win in Saturday's semifinal would provide the chance to claim a 10th conference title on their home court, something the team has not done since the 2021-22 season. The USask team would host the winner of the conference's other semifinal between the No. 2-seeded UBC Thunderbirds and the No. 3-seeded Alberta Pandas. A win would also all but secure a spot in the U SPORTS Final Eight, with Canada West receiving two berths in addition to the automatic qualification of UBC who will serve as tournament hosts.
