Looking Ahead
The No. 1-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies and No. 2-seeded Regina Rams are set to add a third chapter to their Hardy Cup rivalry this Saturday. After meeting in the Canada West championship game for the first time in 2002, it took the provincial rivals 22 years for their second meeting in the title game. Now, the two programs will face off for the second consecutive year in the 88th BioSteel Hardy Cup.
Since last season's conference championship—which saw the Rams secure their second Hardy Cup in program history with a 19-14 win in Saskatoon—the two teams have met just once, in a Week 4 meeting at Griffiths Stadium. In a contest which proved to be the deciding game for the conference's No. 1 seed and home field advantage, Saskatchewan captured a 22-20 victory after holding the Rams to just three second-half points. The Huskies' defence also held the Regina offence to just 282 total yards—their lowest output of the season. The conference's leading rusher, Marshall Erichsen, produced just 78 yards, while Noah Pelletier threw for 196.
It was also a difficult day running the ball for the Huskies, who gained just 66 yards on the ground.
Anton Amundrud and
Daniel Wiebe proved to be the deciding factor, however, with Amundrud recording 330 and Wiebe 155 yards through the air. The pair also connected on Saskatchewan's lone passing major, with the fourth-year pivot finding the veteran pass catcher for a 60-yard, go-ahead strike late in the fourth quarter.
Saturday's contest is likely to feature another defensive slugfest between the two teams, with the two units ranking first and second in the conference in points allowed. In addition to allowing just 17.9 points per game, the Dogs led Canada West in sacks (18) and turnovers (13) and were the lone team to record two defensive scores in 2025. The Rams, meanwhile, have given up 21.5 points per game and allowed the fewest yards per game—just 367.4.
Both defensive units are led by star-studded casts, with
Seth Hundeby,
Charlie Parks,
Reece McCormick, and
Anesu Latmore each earning conference honours for the Huskies. In addition to their All-Star status,
Seth Hundeby was named Canada West's Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, while
Charlie Parks took home Outstanding Lineman of the Year. For the Rams, Brandon Wong, Toryn Swystun-Bernes, Max Polischuk, Jacob Tkachuk, and Carson Sombach were named 2025 Canada West All-Stars.
The two programs boast plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball as well with the Rams seeing a trio of offensive lineman recognized (Riley Schick, Will Templeton, Ethan Graham), in addition to the conference's leading rusher, Marshall Erichsen. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan saw fifth-year receiver
Daniel Wiebe take home Player of the Year honours after recording a Canada West triple crown, while
Ryker Frank and
Anton Amundrud were named All-Stars.
With the Dogs hungry to defend their home turf, the Rams looking to repeat, and a national semifinal berth on the line, Saturday's matchup promises to be another memorable chapter in one of Canada West's fiercest rivalries.
