SASKATOON, Sask. - In what proved to be a commanding performance from the visitors the Brandon Bobcats bounced back from a Friday night overtime loss, handing the University of Saskatchewan Huskies an 85-62 loss Saturday evening (Nov. 29) on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activity Complex. Controlling much of the game from the second quarter onward thanks to an efficient shooting performance and aggressive rebounding advantage, the Bobcats improved to 6-6 while the Huskies fell to 2-8 on the season.
The opening quarter was the most competitive of the contest, with the Bobcats narrowly edging the Huskies 20-19 by the end of the first frame. The two teams traded scoring runs early, with Brandon building a 16-9 advantage before Saskatchewan answered with a 10-4 run. The second frame would see the visitors show their depth however, outscoring the Dogs 23-15, fueled by a commanding presence at the rim and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.
Leading 43-34 at the half, the Bobcats never looked back, holding Saskatchewan to 16 and 12 points in the third and fourth to secure their sixth victory.
Munroop Gill was outstanding for the visitors, recording a game-high 33 points on 14-of-28 shooting while adding seven rebounds and two steals. The product of Surrey, BC's scoring came in waves, which included a 11-point final frame to help the Bobcats seal the win. Travis Hamburger complimented Gill with 17 points, hitting a trio of triples while Sultan Haider-Bhatti was a force on the defensive glass, grabbing 18 rebounds, adding 14 points and coming one assist shy of a triple-double with nine assists.
While Brandon's offence impressed, shooting 49.3% from the field and scoring 46 points in the paint, their defence was just as strong converting 16 points off turnovers and limiting the Huskies to just 39.1% shooting and 15% from beyond the arc.
For Saskatchewan,
Easton Thimm led the way with 16 points and six rebounds while
Emmanuel Bonsu chipped in 10 points and the Huskie bench totaled 22.
With the loss, the Huskies head into the Christmas break with a 2-8 record and in last-place in Canada West's Prairie Division. The Dogs' next action comes early in January, with the team set to take a trip to Edmonton for a meeting with the 8-2 Alberta Golden Bears.
