SASKATOON, Sask. – A thrilling second set comeback drove the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to their third consecutive straight-sets victory Friday night (Nov. 14) as the program took down the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 25-21, 25-19, 25-20. With the win, the Dogs improve to 6-3 and sit in the conference having won six of their last seven, while the visiting Wesmen fall to 1-4.
The opening set the two programs exchange brief scoring runs as the match quickly settled into a back-and-forth affair. However, the Huskies remained composed, hitting at an impressive 34% while the Wesmen cost themselves crucial points with six errors from the service line. Before long, the Dogs were ahead 23-19 before a Winnipeg error and kill from
Jessica Bergstrom gave Saskatchewan the early advantage.
The second set would see the Huskies jump out to a 7-3 advantage before the Wesmen attack found its rhythm. The visiting team rattled off 15 of the next 20 points, with Grace Vallis recording five kills and the Dogs committing seven errors to find themselves in a hole.
Despite the deficit the Dogs responded, with kills from
Keely Anderson and
Rosetta Cyr getting things going before the home team took. In an incredible comeback effort the home team took the next 12 points with
Taryn Hannah recording the longest serving streak of the night by a while margin. Anderson and Cyr each totaled four kills while
Aidan Woloshyn added one as the Huskies clawed their way back.
After a Winnipeg kill to made it 24-19 for Saskatchewan, the Wesmen could not replicate the Huskie comeback, committing a service error to see the Dogs take a 2-0 lead.
With momentum squarely on their side the Huskies quickly capitalized, building a 6-1 lead before the Wesmen, looking to avoid being swept, battled back to tie things at eight apiece. There was no stopping Saskatchewan now though, as the home team recorded runs of 8-2 and 4-1 to take a sizable 20-13 lead.
A late surge from Winnipeg proved to be too little, too late as the Huskies took the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Keely Anderson once again led the Dogs with 13 points and 11 kills as the senior continues an impressive 2025-26 campaign.
Rosetta Cyr followed closely behind with 12 points while
Jessica Bergstrom added 10.5.
For the visitors, Grace Vallis was the only Wesmen to reach double-digits, producing 13 points on 13 kills.
The two teams return to the court at the Physical Activity Complex tomorrow evening, with the second match of their weekend series set to begin at 5:30 PM.
