SASKATOON, Sask. – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies secured a second consecutive victory Friday night (Nov. 14) at the Physical Activity Complex, defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen in four sets (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21). With the win, the Dogs improve to 4-5 while the Wesmen, who have two bye weeks already in 2025-26, fall to 2-3.
The opening set saw the Dogs come out firing, jumping out to an early lead thanks to a pair of Wesmen errors and kills from four starters. After Winnipeg cut the lead to one at 13-12, Saskatchewan put their foot back on the gas pedal, pulling ahead 22-17. Three consecutive errors would then see the Huskies take the first set 25-19.
The opening frame was as good as you could ask for from the home team, with Saskatchewan converting 62% of their kills while Winnipeg committed seven service errors and three attacking errors.
Riding the momentum into the second, the Huskies once again took an early lead. The Wesmen once again answered, cutting their deficit to 7-8 before taking their first lead of the frame 16-15. Three straight attack errors would then force a Saskatchewan timeout as the Dogs looked to limit the damage.
Unable to get back into the set, Winnipeg would even things up at one apiece with a 25-21 set win.
Featuring a back-and-forth start to the third, the Huskies would record four consecutive points thanks to back-to-back Wesmen errors and kills from
Isaiah Mamer and
Emmett Graham to lead 9-4. After trading blows Winnipeg then took their first lead late at 23-22. Graham would respond for the Dogs however and force a quick Winnipeg timeout.
After a Wesmen error following the break,
Jacob Baird sent a high arching pass to Graham who recorded his 16th kill of the match to put the Dogs up 2-1.
With neither team wanting to drop the fourth, three points proved to be the largest lead for either team until the final points of the match. Leading by one, the Huskies would then close out the set and the match thanks to two service errors from Winnipeg, a kill by Graham, and an ace by Baird.
After an impressing outing a week ago,
Emmett Graham returned to form, recording a match-high 20 points and 19 kills.
Isaiah Mamer followed with 12 while
Mathieu Methot added 10.
For the Wesmen, Jaxon Rose led the visiting team with 18 points and 17 kills while Luke Lodewyks was the only other player in double-digits with 13.
The two teams return to the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court tomorrow after noon, with first serve set for 3:00 PM.
