For the first time in 36 years, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and Queen's University Gaels will clash on the gridiron when the two teams meet at Griffiths Stadium for the 2025 Mitchell Bowl.

Saturday's contest will mark the 16th time the Huskies have appeared in a national semifinal and fourth in the past seven seasons. It will also serve as the fifth bowl game played at Griffiths Stadium, with the Dogs owning a perfect 4-0 record at home when a trip to the Vanier Cup is on the line.

For the visiting Gaels, Saturday's game marks their sixth appearance in a national semifinal and first since 2009. The Kingston-based team owns a 4-1 record all-time with four appearances in the Mitchell Bowl (formerly Churchill Bowl) and one in the Atlantic Bowl.

In what will be just the second meeting between the two storied programs, Saskatchewan and Queen's previously met in the 1989 Churchill Bowl at Griffiths Stadium where the Huskies earned a 40-10 win to make their first appearance in the Vanier Cup.

Just like the Huskies, the Gaels enter the semifinal bout fresh off a conference championship. Queen's completed the OUA campaign with a 30-27 upset victory over the undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks in the 117th Yates Cup, claiming their first conference title in 16 years and booking their ticket to Saskatoon. The OUA championship saw the Gaels defence force five first-half turnovers before fighting off a late comeback attempt by the Glden Hawks.

For Saskatchewan, the focus defensively will likely be stopping a productive backfield featuring a pair of OUA All-Stars in quarterback Alex Vreeken and running back Jared Chisari. Vreeken's 2,315 passing yards and 18 touchdowns were both top-five in the nation this season while Chisari averaged 10.1 yards per carry, the second-best in U SPORTS, on his way to 954 yards on the ground.

As a team, Queen's has been one of the most productive in the country ranking third in both points per game (40.8) and yards per game (499) and own a perfect road record of 6-0.

Unlike to the Gaels, the Huskies earned a semifinal berth thanks to a comeback effort against the Regina Rams where the team eliminated a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit to win 25-24 in the final minutes. Extending their season by another week, the Dogs are looking to advance to the Vanier Cup for the first time since 2022, with the National Championship game back in the province of Saskatchewan for the first time since USask hosted in 2006.

The 2025 season has seen the Huskies turn Griffiths Stadium back into one of the hardest places to play in the country, with the Dogs a perfect 6-0 at home. Their success all season, and especially in last week's Hardy Cup victory, has been in large part thanks to the play of their defence. Led by Seth Hundeby, a nominee for the President's Trophy as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the country, the Huskies have allowed the fifth-fewest point per game in the nation, just 17.9, and have given up just 318.5 yards per game in the postseason.

For the team who emerges victorious Saturday afternoon, they will take on the winner of the 2025 Uteck Bowl featuring the University of Montreal Carabins and the Saint Mary's University Huskies in the 60th Vanier Cup on Saturday, November 22 at Mosaic Stadium on CBC Gem.
