CALGARY, Alta. -
Alyssa D'Agnone scored the would-be game winner in the 21st minute to help the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeat the MRU Cougars 2-0 and secure a 2025 Canada West playoff berth Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) in Calgary.
The result sees the Huskies stretch their lead over the Alberta Pandas to seven points in the Canada West standings with just two games remaining in the regular season. Saskatchewan will now set their sights on the MacEwan Griffins who sit three points ahead of the Huskies for third-place in the Prairie Division.
Sunday's match saw the Huskies get after the home Cougars early, and just past the twenty-minute mark the team was rewarded thanks to an outstanding individual effort from D'Agnone. The fifth-year striker carried the ball up the left side of the pitch while fighting with a Cougar defender before stretching out to chip the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.
The score marked D'Agnone's third of the season and her 33rd career point drawing even with former Huskie Rebecca Weckworth for fourth-place in the program record books.
Coming out for the second half, open space on the pitch became a premium as both teams looked to limit scoring chances.
With time winding down
Isabella Salazar Collins intercepted a Cougar pass at midfield before taking the ball into MRU territory and blasting a long-range shot up and over the keeper, all but sealing the win. The score marked Salazar Collins' first career U SPORTS goal, coming in her fourth career game appearance.
The Huskies will now receive a week off from competition before closing out the regular season with back-to-back contests against the Regina Cougars on October 17 and 18.
