Five Huskies Record Double Figures as Dogs Roll Past Griffins

SASKATOON, Sask. - All five starters registered double-digit points over forty minutes of action as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies cruised to a convincing 98-37 victory over the visiting MacEwan Griffins on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court inside the Physical Activity Complex on Saturday night (Oct. 25th).

Logan Reider and Maya Flindall led the way for the Dogs with 19 points each while Téa DeMong, Ella Murphy-Wiebe and Gage Grassick rounded out the scoring with 17, 15 and 13 points, respectively. Their individual efforts helped Saskatchewan earn a 52.9 field goal percentage while also posting a respectable 38.1% from beyond the arc.

For MacEwan, the Griffins struggled to muster up much offensively as a suffocating Dogs defence held the Griffs to just 25% from floor, 10% from three-point range and forcing 25 turnovers. Unity Obasuyi, who put up 11 points in the loss, led MacEwan shooters while Samantha Hickey, Paige Massier and Toni Gordon contributed with six, five and five points, respectively.

Saskatchewan came ready to play out of the gate in the first, connecting on nine of their 14 attempts from the field and three of six from distance while also getting inside the paint, leading to a perfect six for six from the foul line. Flindall set the early offensive tone for the Huskies by picking up ten of her 19 points in the first frame, leading to a 28-6 advantage.

MacEwan improved on their first quarter struggles in the second by forcing their way to the foul line and limiting the Huskies' long ball. Obasuyi, Gordon, Allie Spenrath and Sarah Burnell combined for a perfect 8-for-8 from the stripe while the Griffins perimeter defence held the Huskies to a lone three-ball. This led to MacEwan to their best offensive quarter of the game as the Griffins put up 17, but the Huskies still netted half of their shots from the floor and maintained a 53-23 at halftime.

Coming out the break, the Huskies' offence took a small step back while their defence cranked up the dial. Murphy-Wiebe led individual quarter scorers with nine points, but collectively the Dogs saw their lowest total output with 22. On the other side of the ball, Saskatchewan's defence stymied MacEwan as the Griffins could only manage two field goals in the frame and the Huskies took a 75-27 lead into the final ten minutes.

With the game already out of reach, the Huskies closed out the match by shooting a blistering 69.2% from the floor and connecting on 2-of-5 three point attempts. Reider posted seven of her points in the frame, while Gabrielle Kaban and Charli Wroe came off the bench to combine for the same total as the Dogs closed things out to secure the victory.

The Huskies return to the hardcourt on Oct. 31st, embarking on their first road trip of the season to take on the Mount Royal Cougars. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
