SASKATOON, Sask. -
Dylan Miller went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc and led all scores with 20 points, helping propel the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to an 88-73 victory over the visiting MacEwan Griffins on Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court inside the Physical Activity Complex on Saturday night (Oct. 25).
In addition to his three-point performance, Miller enjoyed an equally efficient night from the field, netting seven of nine attempts while adding two steals on the defensive end.
Emmanuel Bonsu and
Easton Thimm also contributed strong offensive outings, tallying 16 and 14 points tallying 16 and 14 points respectively, as the Huskies shot an impressive 53.8% from the floor and 34.8% from three-point range.
MacEwan's offensive production was shouldered largely by Marcus Moore and Diego Presingular who collected 18 and 17 points apiece. Presingular did much of his damage inside by getting to the line and converting on 7 of 8 free throw attempts. Meanwhile, Moore earned half of his points from the perimeter, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.
The opening quarter saw the Huskies and Griffins both start with a defensive focus as each team recorded their lowest point totals of the night. Saskatchewan, however, gained the upper hand by holding MacEwan to just three field goals and two threes in the frame. Bonsu led the way early, scoring half of his points in the first 10 minutes to help the Huskies establish an 18–14 lead.
Both teams came out firing in the second quarter, trading baskets in what became the highest-scoring frame of the game with 55. MacEwan shot nearly 70% from the field, while hitting two three point shots and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the stripe. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan went 12 for 19 from the floor and 4 for 7 from distance with Miller and Dylan Morin each draining a pair of long balls. The offensive surge sent Saskatchewan into halftime with a 48–39 advantage.
Coming out of the break, the Huskies shooting cooled slightly but
Dylan Miller caught fire, knocking down all four of his three-point shots to put up 12 points in the quarter. His shooting helped Saskatchewan fend off a hot Griffins offense, led by Moore's 10 points, as MacEwan hit 72.7% from the field and added three more treys. When the nets finally cooled at the end of the quarter, the Huskies still held a 68–58 lead heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, sensing their first win of the season, the Huskies leaned on perimeter defense and bench production to close out the game. Saskatchewan's reserves - led by Owen Murphy-Wiebe's six points - combined for 16 of the Huskies 20 points in the period. Defensively, the Huskies shut down any hope of a Griffins comeback by limiting their outside shooters to just one three ball over the final ten minutes. The collective effort helped the Huskies further their lead and secure the victory 88-73.
The Huskies return to the hardcourt on Oct. 31, hitting the road for the first time this season to face the Mount Royal Cougars. Tip-off is set for 6:00PM.
