Huskies Pick Up First Win of 2025-26 in Clean Sweep of Cougars

CALGARY, Alta. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Women's Volleyball team earned their first win of the 2025-26 season in lopsided fashion Friday night (Oct. 24) in Calgary, defeating the Mount Royal Cougars 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-18) on the road.

Throughout the first set the points were evenly matched, until the Huskies began to pull away on the Cougars at 17-16 late in the frame. The visiting Dogs then produced a 6-0 run to take a 23-16 and force an MRU timeout, however following a back-and-forth rally, Saskatchewan would force match-point before taking the set 25-19.

The Huskies were led by Keely Anderson in the first, who recorded five of the team's 16 kills. Anderson would go on to finish the night as the team's leading scorer with 15.5 points and 13 kills in the sweep.

The second set saw a much more tightly-contested start to the frame before the Huskies pulled away by four and forced another Cougar timeout as the home team looked to slow down the Dogs. However, the task was easier said then done, as Saskatchewan continued to add to their advantage, ultimately taking the second 25-16.

Through two sets, Taryn Hannah was just behind Anderson on the scoresheet with eight kills, and went on to finish the match with 11.0.

Looking to close out the match, the Huskies opened the third set with a 7-1 scoring run before finding themselves ahead 20-10 after a Hannah ace.

After the Cougars once again looked to slow Saskatchewan, utilizing a timeout, the home team came out with a 5-1 run but it would prove to be too little too late as a Jessica Bergstrom kill saw the Dogs take the set 25-18 and the victory.

In addition to finishing the match with a game-high 13 kills, Anderson would also lead the match in both total blocks (2.5) and digs (14). For setter Tielle Hagel, the fourth-year student-athlete recorded 27 assists in addition to a kill and 12 digs.

The Huskies and Cougars are back it tomorrow night with first serve at Kenyon Court set for 7:00 PM.
