SASKATOON, Sask. - Eight different goal scorers led the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a dominant victory over the Regina Cougars Friday night (Oct. 24) at Merlis Belsher Place.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-1-0 and have now won three straight, while the Cougars continue to search for their first win of the season at 0-5-0.Â
Former ECHLer
Conner Roulette opened the scoring for the Huskies Friday night, recording his third of the season after beating Regina goaltender Justen Maric with a sharp angled shot from below the face off dot. Less than a minute later,
Liam Keeler extended the lead to two after being left a lone in front of the Cougar net for his first of the campaign.Â
Just before the five-minute mark in the first, Roulette was back at it, this time finding Rhett Rhienheart at the point who fired a shot which was deflected by
Raphael Pelletier and past the visiting netminder. Roulette went on to finish the night with four points (1 G, 3 A) while Rhinehart (3 A) and Pelletier (1 G, 2 A) each recorded three in the win.
Leading by three with under four minutes remaining until the first intermission,
Cade Hayes decided to get in on the scoring outburst. After
Ty Prefontaine sprung
Chantz Petruic on a two-on-one, the fifth-year forward found Hayes to make it 4-0 heading into the break.
Midway through the second Roulette was back on the pass, sending a pass to
Cole Jordan headed towards the net. The third-year Brandon product then went to the backhand before sliding the puck through the outstretched pads of Maric for his first in 2025-26.
With time running down in the frame,
Chantz Petruic made perhaps the highlight of the night when the Canada West leading goal scorer split a pair of Regina defenceman before beating the diving keeper with a nifty shot up and over an extended glove. Petruic now sits in a tie with teammate
Carter Stebbings for the conference lead with six goals through five games.
After the Cougars got one back nine minutes into the third, a pair of Huskies would each find the back of the net for the first time this season in
Landon Kosior and
Braxton Buckberger.Â
Making 20 saves in the Huskie crease was first-year Huskie
Bryan Thomson, who earned his second consecutive win after earning a shutout last weekend in a 7-0 victory against Trinity Western.
The Huskies and Cougar's home-and-home weekend series now shifts to Regina, where the Dogs will look to earn a swep of their provincial rivals at The Co-operators Centre. Puck drop in the Queen City is set for 7:00 PM CST.
