Huskies Cruise to 87-28 Season-Opening Win Over MacEwan on Banner Night

SASKATOON, Sask.Gage Grassick, Logan Reider, and Téa DeMong all hit double-digits to help lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskie Women's Basketball team to a lopsided 87-28 victory over the MacEwan Griffins in their 2025-26 season opener Friday night (Oct. 24).

Following the contest, fans in attendance also witnessed the Huskies add some new décor to the Physical Activity Complex as the team raised both their Canada West and U SPORTS Championship banners from the 2024-25 season.

Before the team celebrated last year's successes though, they kicked off the night with a dominant opening quarter, closing out with frame with an 18-point run to take a 26-5 lead.

The first-quarter blitz was led by the reigning national player of the year and last season's U SPORTS Final 8 MVP Gage Grassick, who totaled 13 points after a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance. Logan Reider also got off to a hot start, connecting on a pair of triples early on a night which saw her shoot 100% from beyond the arc.

The second quarter saw the Griffins come out and double their point total, thanks in large to the efforts of Unity Obasuyi who recorded seven points on 2-of-3 shooting in the frame. Obasuyi would finish the night as the team's leading scorer by a significant margin, recording 20 points in the loss.

Despite a better effort from MacEwan, the Huskies efficient offence and smothering defence continued to be too much, totaling 23 points in the quarter. Tea DeMong and Grassick led the Dogs with six points each, with DeMong going a perfect 3-for-3.

The third quarter saw DeMong add another 11 points to her total thanks to four field goals and a trio of made free throws. Reider would add another pair of makes from deep as the Huskies matched their best quarter with 26 points.

The final frame saw just 16 total points, as the Griffins were held to 16.7% from the field and the Huskies were without a make from three-point range. The low-scoring quarter would be a fitting end for MacEwan, who recorded just four points to solidify a 59-point loss.

Gage Grassick led Saskatchewan offensively on the night, finishing with 21 points and four assists while Reider (18) and DeMong (17) followed closely behind. Defensively, the Dogs saw an impressive performance from Ella Murphy Wiebe, who led the team with five steals, and rookie Isabela Jickling who recorded four steals of her own.

In addition to an impressive shooting performance from beyond the arc (47.1%), the Huskies also dominated under the basket, outscoring the Griffins 48 to 10 in the paint.

The Huskies and Griffins will face off again tomorrow evening (Oct. 25), with the second game of their weekend series set to tip off at 5:00 PM at the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activity Complex.
