Looking Ahead
Home field advantage is on the line this week as the 6-1 Saskatchewan Huskies host the 4-3 Manitoba Bisons.
Already guaranteed to host a Canada West semifinal, the Huskies can ensure they will only take the field at Griffiths the rest of the conference season, needing a win over the Bisons Saturday or a Regina (6-1) loss to UBC (2-5) Friday night. A win would see the Huskies host the No. 4-seed, currently held by the Calgary Dinos, while a loss would see Manitoba return to Saskatoon, with the Bisons locked into the No. 3-seed.
Saturday's contest will also serve as the second meeting between the two teams, with the first coming back in week three and featuring a 21-20 Manitoba win in Winnipeg. The Bisons were able to walk away with the win and hand the Huskies their only loss of the campaign thus far thanks to a comeback effort featuring 21 unanswered, second half points and missed Huskie field goal attempt as time expired. Saskatchewan was held to just 5.4 yards per play on the day, their lowest output of the season, while the Bisons totaled 200+ yards both on the ground and through the air.
Since then, Saskatchewan has won four straight, averaging 30.5 points and 421 yards per game despite being without starting quarterback
Anton Amundrud for the last two contests. The winning streak has also seen some outstanding play from the Huskie defence, who lead the conference in points allowed (18.7 per game), interceptions (7) and sacks (17).
Defensively, Saskatchewan is led by two of the best defensive players in the conference in linebacker
Seth Hundeby and lineman
Charlie Parks. Despite missing one game this season Hundeby ranks 8th in total tackles, 5th in sacks, 1st in TFLs, and is responsible for more turnovers than any other player. Meanwhile, Parks is leading Canada West in sacks (5) and tied with his teammate with six tackles for a loss.
On offence, receiver
Daniel Wiebe and
Ryker Frank, two of the six seniors playing in their final regular season home game Saturday, have led the charge. The pair have combined for over 1,700 yards and continue to establish themselves as two of the best players the program has ever seen at their respective positions. While Frank already owns a pair of Huskie career records, he continues to inch closer to the all-time rushing title while Wiebe approaches career records for receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.
