SASKATOON, Sask. -
Taryn Izsak and
Marie Kilcher scored for the Huskies in their final home game while
Cassidy Vieira added a third, as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Regina Cougars 3-0 Saturday night at Griffiths Stadium.
The win sees the Huskies finish the 2025 Canada West regular season with an 8-5-1 record and in fourth-place in the conference's Prairie Division. It also extended the Huskie lead back to four points in the U-Prairie Challenge, presented by SaskMIlk, following a loss to Regina last night. For the Cougars meanwhile, the result sees the team close out the campaign with a 4-9-1 record.
Saturday's match saw the Huskies come out with purpose early, pushing the pace and challenging their provincial rivals. In the eighth minute, the Dogs were rewarded with their first corner kick of the evening.
Nammi Nguyen would play the ball to
Georgina Gannitsos-Clark, who fired a long range shot which came up just short. However, with no Regina defenders to stop her, fifth-year
Taryn Izsak redirected the ball into the net for her first of the season.
As the matched continued it was all Huskies, with the home team controlling play and possessions as they looked to close out the regular season with a win.
In the 28th minute it appeared Saskatchewan was going to double their lead, sending a flurry of shots at the Regina net but with a crowd in front, the ball could not find it's way through.
A few minutes later, the Dogs produced another high-danger chance after a shot from distance was initially by stopped by Regina keeper Peyton Magnuson. Despite the save, the rebound found
Alyssa D'Agnone who fired a shot which hit the crossbar before being cleared.
The Huskies would head into the half with lead after holding the visiting Cougars to no shots as the Dogs impressive play from the night before continued against Regina.
In the opening minutes of the second half, rookie
Cassidy Vieira doubled the Huskie lead after a Cougar clearing attempt came up short. The product of Winnipeg then sent a high arching header back towards the goal which proved to be just out of reach for Manguson.
The Huskie win was then sealed in the 86th minute when fifth-year striker
Marie Kilcher redirected a shot from
Jenna Steacy to make it a three-goal game.
Following their 2025 regular season finale, the Huskies will begin preparation for the Canada West playoffs and the UBC Thunderbirds, their quarter-final opponent. Next weekend the Huskies will travel to Vancouver to take on the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked T-Birds in the opening round of the postseason.Â
