SASKATOON, Sask. - The Universiyt of Saskatchewan Huskies cruised to a second consecutive victory over the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday night (Jan. 11) on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court. The Dogs outscored the visiting Cougars in each quarter to earn an 80-55 win and improve to 8-2. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 7-5.
Both teams came out for the opening quarter firing, with Dogs shooting 47.1% from the field which was offset by MRU connecting on 40% from beyond the arc. The Huskies were able to maintain pace with the impressive three-point shooting thanks to some stout defence play which forced nine turnovers.
The second frame saw both the Huskies and Cougars' shooting cool off but another nine forced turnovers allowed the home team to earn a 17-16 advantage in the quarter and take a four-point lead heading into the half.
In a similar story to Friday night's win over the Cougars, the Huskies dominated the second half, outscoring the visiting team 23-11 in the third and 22-13 in the fourth. It was in the second half that the Huskies also returned to their efficient shooting while holding MRU to under 31% from the field and 20% from beyond the arc.
Points in the paint was also a highlight for the Dogs again, as the team continued to press their size advantage. The Huskies outscored the Cougars 46-20 in the paint. In addition to their prowess close to the basket, Saskatchewan held the upper hand in transition, outscoring the visitors 20-2 in fast break scoring.
Individually,
Gage Grassick continued her sensational season, recording a game-high 21 points which included five triples to go along with five assists and five steals. Téa DeMong followed closely with 17 points in the contest thanks to an efficient 7-for-11 shooting performance.
Courtney Primeau would also reach the double-digit point mark for the second consecutive game, recording twelve.
For the visiting Cougars, Maddy Hooper led the visiting team with 18 points. Hayley Lalor followed with fifteen.
The Dogs are back in action next weekend when they head to Winnipeg to take on the Wesmen. Meanwhile the Cougars will head to Brandon to take on the Bobcats. Both matchups take place on Jan. 17 and 18.
