Dogs Sweep Cougars in Weekend Series to Open 2025

SASKATOON, Sask. - After a 6-3 victory on the road last night in the first of two games in the U-Prairie Challenge, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies were looking to take another win against the Cougars to ring in the New Year at Merlis Belsher Place and improve their record to 14-4-0 on the season.

After a combined 9 goals between the Huskies and Cougars last night, there was no doubt in that it wouldn't take long before the fans saw some points on the board. With some tenacious play from both teams in the first half of the opening period it would be Kolton Shindle of the Cougars who fired one past Roddy Ross to put U of R up early.

The Dogs couldn't catch a break as Jarrett Penner would head to the box late in the first giving the Cougars their first power play of the game. With the Huskies being 87.3% on the Penalty Kill this season (7th in U SPORTS) they were able to fend off the Cougars and keep themselves withing one going into the 2nd.

The high octane action continued into the 2nd as just 2:25 into the period the Huskies own Ty Prefonatine netted his 4th goal of the season, evening up the scoreboard. The Dogs weren't ready to ease up yet, as just minutes later Vince Loschiavo fired one past Cougar netminder Jackson Fellner to put the Huskies up 2-1 with plenty of time left in the bout. Loschiavo wasn't finished yet as he put away his second of the game thanks to great set up from Trevor Wong increasing the lead to 3-1. The Cougars were able to sneak one past Ross to cut the Huskie lead down to just one with 9:20 left to go in the period.

The Huskie Power Play has been seemingly unstoppable this year as they sit at 1st in the nation converting at an impresive 36.1%. They didn't waste any time showing fans why as Carter Stebbings sent one past Fellner to increase the Dogs lead once again. Chantz Petruic was able to put away his 10th of the season to give the Dogs a three-goal lead going into the final period of play.

The Dogs were still barking for more heading in to the third with shots firing at Fellner from all angles. Their lead would increase to 7-2 thanks to Cade Hayes and Chantz Petruic who each sent a goal past the Cougars to cement the Dogs sweep in their U-Prairie Challenge weekend series.
