Huskie Football Celebrates 22nd Dog's Breakfast

SASKATOON, SK – Thursday morning (May 2) marked the 22nd edition of the Staybridge Suites & Holiday Inn Express University Dogs' Breakfast at Prairieland Park. The event was attended by nearly 1,500 passionate supporters of Huskie football looking to create meaningful change through the sport.

"This is really a celebration of the game and an example of what the game can do for the community, and how that community can lift a program and its student-athletes," says Glen Suitor, a long-time member of the Huskie Football Foundation and the MC of the Dogs' Breakfast. "It is also about how that athlete and team can bring a community together. This is the highlight of that, I think it's the best fundraiser in the country as far as student-athlete support."

Launched in 2001, the Dogs' Breakfast is a legendary fundraising spectacle produced by the Huskie Football Foundation in support of the University of Saskatchewan Huskie football program. The foundation, comprised of 26 community members and business leaders, has the singular goal of fueling the goals and dreams of the student-athletes on the Huskie football team.

Since its inception, the foundation and the Dogs' Breakfast has been immensely successful in its mission, having generated over $2 million in support of the program and funding the scholarships of countless student-athletes over the years.

"For a group of community member and business leaders to support the program with the passion they do, it's hard to find that," says head coach Scott Flory. "There is no immediate connection to the team, they are not former players or alumni, but they care deeply about our student-athletes. They do incredible work to help the program succeed and the Dogs' Breakfast is a phenomenal way to pay tribute to those students."

The foundations support of the program has helped the Huskies become one of the premier programs in the nation, earning seven Hardy Cup Championships and reaching the Vanier Cup on seven occasions since the breakfast began.

In 2024, the Dog's Breakfast raised $100,000 which will be used to supply numerous scholarships to student-athletes donning the green and white.

"I'm thrilled to see the passion that our community shows the team every year," says Chair of the Huskie Football Foundation John Hyshka. "To see the support of the student-athletes through scholarships and other programming is incredible. And to bring in a speaker like Sean Payton goes to show how well the breakfast is viewed across North America, there is no doubt it is one of the best fundraisers in football. Now I hope to see that same support show up in August once the season gets underway."

The Huskies kick off the 2024 season with an exhibition game against the Alberta Golden bears on August 22 at Griffiths Stadium before heading to Winnipeg for their regular season opener on August 31 against the Bisons. Their first home action comes on September 13 when they host the Calgary Dinos.
