MHKY: Huskies blow out the Bisons on home ice

SASKATOON, SK – FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2024

SETTING THE STAGE
The Saskatchewan Huskies played host to the Manitoba Bison Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place after a win and OT shoot-out loss on Monday and Tuesday @ TWU Spartans in a rescheduled Canada West series.

Coming into the game tonight the Huskies sported a record of 18-6-1-1, good for 4th place in Canada West standings and 7-1-1-1 in their last 10.  The Bison were 5-20-1, 8th place in Canada West standings and 7-2-1 in their last 10.   The Huskies were 7-4-1 on home ice, while the Bison were 3-8-1 on the road.

These two teams faced off last September 28th and 29th in Manitoba with the Huskies taking both games, 6-1 and 3-2 respectively.
 

TONIGHT
Saskatchewan started Roddy Ross in net tonight.  Ross came into the game sporting a 1.95 GAA, 2nd in Canada West and a record of 10-3-0-1.  The Manitoba Bison countered with Ross Hawryluk, who coming into the game with a 3.56 GAA and a 3-6 record.

The goals came fast and furious, and in bunches, but the Huskies were dominant from start to finish earning an 8-2 home ice victory at Merlis Belsher Place. 
 

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • At 7:27 of the first period the Huskies Mark Rumsey (4) opened the scoring with a beautiful one-timer to give the Huskies the early 1-0 advantage.

  • The Saskatchewan Huskies extended the lead to 2-0 with just 9 seconds remaining in the opening frame when Raphael Pelletier (12) went top-shelf on Hawryluk's short-side.

  • Just 8 seconds later, at the 19:59 mark of the 1st period the Manitoba Bisons Jackson Arpin (4) beat the buzzer to get the Bison on the board.  Huskies 2, Bison 1 after the first period.

  • The flood gates opened early and often in the second period for the home Huskies.  Starting at 2:34 into the second frame the Huskies Vince Loschiavo (14) gave the Huskies the 3-1 lead.

  • At 3:40 the Huskies Chantz Petruic (13) extended the Huskie lead 4-1.  Then less then a minute later, 4:37 into the second period, Cade Hayes scored his 6th of the season to give the home team the 5-1 lead.  Hayes goal chased Bisons started Ross Hawryluk in favour of Kolby Thornton.

  • The Bisons answered back at the 12:40 mark of the second period when Jonny Hooker (12) slide one past Roddy Ross.

  • The Huskies replied shortly thereafter when Vince Loschiavo (15) went top-shelf on Kolby Thornton to extend the Huskie lead to 6-2.

  • The Huskies put the nail in the coffin with under five minutes left in the contest when Dawson Holt (8) came speeding in and slid one past Kolby Thornton

  • With a nifty backhand, and scoring his second of the night, Cade Hayes (7) made it 8-2 Huskies.


THE STATS

  • Final shots on goal were 37-27 in favor of the Huskies.

  • The Huskies were 0-4 with the man-advantage, while the Bison went 0-5. 

  • Tonight's attendance at Merlis Belsher Place was 1001.


THE STANDINGS
Following tonight's game the Saskatchewan Huskies record stands at 19-6-1-1, tied for 3rd place in Canada West standings, while the Manitoba Bison dropped to 5-21-1, and 8th in Canada West standings.
