SASKATOON, Sask. - The Huskies prevailed over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) by a final score of 7-0 at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies offense exploded for five goals in the first half and the Dogs never looked back, tailing two more goals in the 2nd half and shutting out the Lethbridge offense entirely.
Â
The Huskies wasted little time getting on board thanks to a goal from
Alyssa D'Agnone in the 14th minute. After a beautiful arial pass from teammate
Cheyenne Lehmann, the Huskies leading scorer found space inside the box and netted the games' first goal.
Â
Later in the 24th minute, a Huskies corner kick from
Nicole Burnett deflected off Lethbridge defender Hila Tata for a Pronghorns own goal, doubling the Dogs' lead.
Â
The Huskies were once again back on the attack in the 25th as
Cheyenne Lehmann fought off a pair of Lethbridge defenders inside the box and hammered the ball to the top corner, increasing the Huskies lead to 3-0.
Â
Four minutes later, the Dogs converted on another Burnett corner kick as she found the head of Taryn Iszak who tucked home her third goal of the season.
Â
The game also marked a significant milestone for Iszak as she celebrated her 50th career game as a Huskie.
Â
Now up by four, the Huskies first half goal surge continued.
Â
In the 43rd minute,
Alyssa D'Agnone once again found the ball in space, allowing her to walk in and rip the ball short side to claim her 2nd goal of the game and 7th on the season.
Â
At halftime, the Huskies led the Pronghorns 5-0.
Â
Coming out of the break, the Huskies offense was still hungry for more as
Cheyenne Lehmann was denied twice on a pair of brilliant saves by Lethbridge keeper Heidi Andres, thwarting the Dogs' early second half chance.
Â
But the tenacity of Lehmann would eventually pay off in the 66th minute. The left-foot of the Huskies striker connected on the ball inside the Pronghorns 18-yard box, hammering home her second goal of the game and putting the Huskies up 6-0.
Â
As the clock ticked away in the 78th,
Kieran McKercher looked to make it lucky number 7 for the Huskies.
Â
After a crossing pass from
Madison Mayert, McKercher's first shot was denied on a handball in the box, but it would not matter as the Huskies winger buried the ensuing rebound.
Â
The tally was extra special for McKercher as the 5th year Huskie earned her first career USPORTS goal.
Â
The Huskies closed out the game in the final minutes, earning a convincing victory and improving their record to 5-2-3. The loss drops the Pronghorns' record to 2-8 on the season.
