WINNIPEG, Man. - Sunday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie women's soccer team captured a convincing 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen in their 2024 regular season finale. With the win, the playoff-bound Huskies complete the season with a 7-2-5 record to finish 3rd in Canada West's Prairie Division. Meanwhile, the Wesmen see their season come to a close with a 1-12-1 record.
It was an impressive first half in Winnipeg for the Dogs, who jumped out to a two-goal lead before playing stout defense to capture the victory.
Second-year forward
Madison Mayert kicked off the festivities, scoring her fifth goal of the season 24 minutes into the match off a nice feed from
Hadley Anthony. For Mayert, the first game-winning goal of her career proved to be the 10th point of her season, tying teammates
Alyssa D'Agnone and
Marie Kilcher for the team-high on the year. Meanwhile Anthony recorded her second assist of the season on the scoring play.
Just over ten minutes later the Huskies doubled their lead after a foul in the Winnipeg box led to a penalty kick.
Marie Kilcher made no mistake, converting the attempt for her sixth goal and tenth point of the campaign. The trio of Saskatchewan team-leaders all close out the season tied for 11th in conference scoring.
Despite recording seven shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Dogs were unable to extend their lead with all of their scoring chances going wide or being blocked by Wesmen.
For
Nadia Kalyar it was a quiet day in net, with the third year Saskatoon product forced to make only two saves in the match. Kalyar recorded the eighth clean sheet of her career and jumps into a tie for 5th-place all-time in the Huskie record books. Her two saves on the day also marked the 99th and 100th of her career, placing her 4th in the program records.
At the other end of the pitch it was an impressive performance from Wesmen keeper Camille Forbes who recorded 12 saves while facing an barrage of 27 Huskie shots.
Now the Huskies await the results of the final match of the Canada West regular season between the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans which is set to be played at 6:30pm pacific time. If the Thunderbirds prevail the Dogs will head to Victoria for the quarterfinal round of the postseason next weekend. On the flip side, if Trinity Western completes the victory the Huskies will take on the Spartans in Langley, B.C. in a week's time.
