EDMONTON, AB – The Saskatchewan Huskies once again proved they were a force to be reckoned with after a 7-2 win over the MacEwan Griffins Saturday evening, following a 10-0 blowout win Friday night. The Huskies would go 17-2 in goals for and against in the weekend series, scoring a whopping 26 goals in their last three games, all on away ice.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
-
After two shutout wins, Saskatchewan would go with Jordan Kooy between the posts for his third start in a row. The Griffins would go with Ashton Abel to start the game and once again swap out goaltenders halfway through, putting in Thomas Davis.
-
Saskatchewan's Cole Jordan would be the first on the sheet, scoring an early goal in the opening minutes of the first. The Griffins knew then that they would need to steep it up if they didn't want a repeat of Friday's game to occur.
-
MacEwan's Carter Chorney was assessed a rare tripping major late in the first period, and the Huskies used the ensuing powerplay to all but put the game to bed. Not only did the penalty call happen 10 seconds after the Huskies had already scored a powerplay goal to go up 2-0, but the visitors also piled on with two more on the five-minute man advantage and put MacEwan in too far of a hole to dig out of before heading to the dressing room for the first-period intermission.
-
After returning to the ice for the second, the Huskies would tack on another four goals, with two from Chantz Petruic, to make it a 7-0 game. The Griffins, at this point, were making calls to damage control, desperate to be not completely blown out by the Huskies two games in a row.
-
The calls must have gone through for the Griffins, as they would put an end to the Huskies' scoring streak after Jordan Taupert got one past Jordan Kooy on the Griffins' powerplay, ending Kooy's shutout streak in the final minutes of the second.
-
The Huskies would remain scoreless in the third, maintaining their seven goals scored earlier in the game. The Griffins would add one more to their side of the paper with another powerplay goal from Loeden Schaufler, making it a 7-2 game, which would eventually be the final score.
THE STATS
-
Saskatchewan's Chantz Petruic led the night with two goals and three assists to add up to a 5 point night for the third-year forward.
-
Jordan Kooy (SSK) would make 22 saves out of the Griffins' 24 shots. Ashton Abel (L) (GMU) would save 15/2, and Thomas Davis would save 14/15 of the Huskie's shots on MacEwan's net.
-
The Huskies would go 3/6 on the powerplay, and the Griffins would go 2/7.
-
The final shots on net count would be 36-24 in favour of the Huskies.
THE STANDINGS
Saskatchewan improved to 15-5-0, remaining fifth in the conference, but they have two games in hand on both MRU (17-5-0) and Alberta (15-5-2), teams just above them in the standings. The Griffins are now 6-17-1 but still lead Regina (4-16-2) by three points in the race for the final playoff spot after the Cougars lost 4-0 to Mount Royal on Saturday.
THE NEXT ONE
The Huskies will be back home at Merlis Belcher Place in Saskatoon next weekend for the first time since January 6th, when they hosted and defeated the Regina Cougars in the U-Prairie Challenge presented by SaskMilk. The Huskies will welcome the Alberta Golden Bears for a rematch after falling 0-2 in their previous series earlier this season.
