SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies (5-3-0) welcomed the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-8-0) to Saskatoon on cool Saturday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park. The Huskies were powerful on offense but Pronghorns goalkeeper Birdie Harding was nearly unstoppable in net. Saskatchewan would win the game 1-0.
The Huskies came out strong in the first five minutes, with shots on goal from
Madison Mayert,
Marie Kilcher and
Alyssa D'Agnone. Five more shots on goal would come from the Huskies before the 20
th minute was up, with Saskatchewan outshooting Lethbridge 8-1.
Harding would draw the yellow card in the 41
st minute after a collision in the box. The resulting kick taken by Saskatchewan's
Jade Houmphanh would find its way past her and into the next for the Huskie goal and the 1-0 lead heading into the half.
A flurry of substitutions from both teams would start the second half as Saskatchewan and Lethbridge looked to load up on power. Aggressive play would hit the field from both teams, with Lethbridge's Tory Clements and Saskatchewan's
Amou Madol both drawing the yellow cards.
The last ten minutes of the game saw the Huskies offence push hard, with shots on goal from
Caitlin Stove,
Cheyenne Lehmann,
Marie Kilcher,
Jenna Steacy, and
Jade Houmphanh all within a three minute span. Harding was incredible in net for the Pronghorns, ensuring nothing got past the line.
Harding would end the game with 12 saves for the Pronghorns, with
Nadia Kalyar saving two shots on goal for the Huskies in the victory.
Nammi Nguyen would be named MVP for Saskatchewan, with Jessica Jorgensen being named MVP for Lethbridge.
The win moves Saskatchewan to 6-3-0 and third place in the Prairie Division of Canada West.
