MSOC: Huskies Pick Up Third Draw of the Season Against TWU

LANGLEY, BC – Despite a late rally and push for the win, the Saskatchewan Huskies men's soccer team would settle for their second draw of the season, in a 1-1 tie against the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night at Chase Office Field. It marks the fourth time in the last four matches that the Spartans have had to settle for a tie. TWU remains undefeated with a record of 3-0-5, while the Huskies move to 1-3-3 and fourth place in the Prairie Division.

Jaron Slopinski was in net for the Huskies, making five saves over the course of the evening, while the Spartans went with Yeshua Silwamba in net, making two saves in the tie.

After a scoreless first half, which saw the Huskies miss on a couple of quality chances, Trinity Western finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, thanks to rookie midfielder Marcel Bona. Bona scored his first goal of the season, finishing high in the Huskies net. He took the shot from the top of the penalty area after third year forward Xander Roxburgh was able to get a pass through the challenging defender to an open Bona.

TWU would control much of the second half until Saskatchewan made the most of a Spartan defensive miscue. The Huskies Robert Woodroffe-Brown attacked a loose ball in the Spartans box and tied the match up at 1-1 in the 84th minute.

"I think that we started a little bit slow in the game," said Spartans Head Coach Mike Searon after the game. "I thought Sask was good in the first little bit. But as the game started to settle I thought that we were able to play the way that we wanted to. Coming out in the second half I thought that we began to dominate the game a little bit more and we got our goal on the counter.

"We were in control and then obviously we had a moment and our defenders slipped. He isn't going to slip every time, but that is soccer, and that happens sometimes. We need to get to the point where we are scoring more and demand more from the guys up front."

The Huskies had a 10-7 edge in total shots throughout the evening but the Spartans had the 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Saskatchewan would also draw ten fouls in the game compared to the Spartans four.
